Fidji Simo, OpenAI's second-in-command, gave up her operating role on July 9, after a chronic neuroimmune condition came back1. The seat sat empty for weeks, an odd silence from a company racing toward a public offering3. A month later, twenty-seven years of one man's memory left Google, when Jeff Dean co-founded a startup with three senior colleagues5. Apple made an engineer its chief executive7. Google lost its star architect back to the rival that first hired him away4. Four labs, eight months, a talent map redrawn.
OpenAI's Second Chair Empties
Simo joined OpenAI in May 2025 to run applications, covering ChatGPT's consumer growth and the business under Sam Altman's research ambitions1. Her July 9 note cited a relapse harder to manage than she had expected. She moved to a part-time advisory role and stepped back from daily operations. Kevin Weil, the chief product officer, left in April. Kate Rouch, the marketing chief, left the same month to focus on cancer treatment. Three senior operators leaving inside six months says more than bad luck. It says an organization is absorbing turnover at a pace its structure now has to carry.
A new venture gave her a second act by August. Fortune tied ChronicleBio, a health startup, directly to her own diagnosis2. The Biggest AI Hires of 2025 listed the buildout that put Simo, Weil and Rouch in place in a single year. 2026 spent half that roster in eight months.
Altman wrote his reaction on X, in lowercase. "i am really sad about this and very grateful for all fidji has done for openai, and even grateful for her friendship and who she is as a person. we all wish her the best for a speedy recovery. this sucks."1 Investors preparing for OpenAI's eventual offering read executive turnover as a warning. CNBC used that framing in its Aug. 14 report, months before any prospectus goes public3.
Google Loses Twice in One Summer
Noam Shazeer's second exit from Google hit harder than his first. Google had spent billions two years earlier to get him back, through a licensing deal with Character.AI, the company he founded after his first exit4. On June 18, he left again, for OpenAI. Axios called him a Transformer co-author whose work sits under the design nearly every large language model still uses9. Pay that size exists to prevent exactly this. It happened anyway.
Jeff Dean's move on Aug. 5 was bigger. Twenty-seven years at Google ended when Dean, its chief scientist, co-founded Discovery Loop5. He brought Sanjay Ghemawat, a senior fellow; Oriol Vinyals, a research vice president at Google DeepMind; and Quoc Le, a Google Brain co-founder6. GeekWire reported that the venture automates research, proposing experiments, running them, and repeating thousands of times per cycle. Dean described the mechanism himself. "We think there is opportunity for AI to more fully automate what has traditionally been a very human-intensive experimental loop. You will get both a higher quantity and a higher quality of experiments, and that will lead to scientific breakthroughs and advances."
Google became a founding investor, supplying compute for the first year beside Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures5. Four exits at once reads as a resignation. It plays as a spinout Google chose to fund.
FutureSearch, a forecasting research house, scored Discovery Loop's chances before its seed round closed. Dan Schwarz, the firm's co-founder and chief executive, published the forecast on Aug. 5, the same day Dean's startup announced itself. "Even fully committed, a team of this caliber gets barely one-in-three odds of an AlphaFold-class recognized breakthrough on a 29-month clock," Schwarz wrote10. One in three is the number FutureSearch assigns to a founding team it otherwise rates among the best working today.
Meta Superintelligence Labs, formed the prior year under Alexandr Wang, kept quieter. Confirmed 2026 hiring news about the unit stayed thin beside the volume out of OpenAI, Google and Anthropic. Silence reads two ways in an industry built on leaks. Either the roster held, or word of its cracks stayed inside the building.
Two exits in seven weeks reversed Google's retention story. The company that spent billions rehiring one architect in 2024 lost him again in 2026, then lost four more scientists in a single afternoon, all before Labor Day.

Cupertino Picks an Engineer
Apple announced on April 20 that Tim Cook would become executive chairman, and John Ternus would become chief executive on Sept. 17. Ternus had led hardware engineering and spent roughly 25 years there, which made him the inside favorite well before the board said so. Cook described him in plain terms. "John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor." Board chair Arthur Levinson made the case on results. "We believe John is the best possible leader to succeed Tim and as he transitions to CEO we know his love of Apple, his leadership, deep technical knowledge, and relentless focus on creating great products will help lead Apple to an extraordinary future."
Ternus inherits a company whose AI work drew public scrutiny for years. Apple's board gave the next chapter to an engineer raised in hardware, and skipped anyone from outside. Read it as strategy. It bets on hardware and software fitting together, rather than a flashy outside hire. That is the opposite of what OpenAI, Google and Anthropic did all year.
Anthropic Hires for Infrastructure First
Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic as head of pre-training in May, and it may be the year's most symbolic hire8. An OpenAI co-founder and former Tesla director of AI picked the lab built by former OpenAI safety researchers.
Karpathy co-founded OpenAI in 2015, then ran Tesla's Autopilot vision team before going back to frontier research8. His arrival gives Anthropic a founding-generation name, at a company built partly by people who left OpenAI over research direction.
Nine other named hires followed a pattern investors rarely notice. Ross Nordeen left xAI to lead computing infrastructure8. Richard Quach came from Uber to run global real estate and building. Eric Boyd, once president of Microsoft's Azure AI platform, took over the infrastructure team.
Golubina Markovikj came from Google to lead change management8. Sophia Marquez, from 1X and Apple, now runs compute buying. Tim Hughes left STACK Infrastructure, where he was chief development officer, to lead building work. Mike Fein left a Google security post to run security. Natasha Darcy Souza came from Stripe to lead sales abroad, and Irina Ghose came from Microsoft India to open the Bengaluru office. Seven of ten hires build infrastructure, buy power, and secure buildings. Three build models. Anthropic's 2026 chart describes a company preparing to run a physical business at industrial scale.
Last year's roster favored research titles almost every time. This year's list shifts toward the people who keep power flowing and servers cool.
The Moves That Defined the Year So Far
Strategic weight, rather than headline size, set the order below. Six things counted. How big was the team that moved. Seniority of the role vacated or filled. What reason the company gave, or analysts inferred. Any pay signal that got disclosed. Timing against competitive pressure. And whether the move changed who controls a scarce resource, whether compute, distribution or capital.
- Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le left Google together on Aug. 5 to found Discovery Loop, taking 27 years of one leader's judgment and three senior careers out in an afternoon56.

Twelve moves, four companies, one pattern. The labs with the deepest research staffs spent 2026 strengthening the operations underneath them. Apple, with the deepest operations staff of all, reached for an engineer to lead its next research push. Talent moves both ways at once, and the direction each company picked says more than a press release will. Track the org charts through the rest of 2026 and the pattern should hold. Scarcity in one resource pulls a lab toward whoever supplies it, whether that is a research idea, a data center lease, or twenty-five years of trust.

Anthropic's infrastructure hiring points toward a data center or compute deal before year end8. Apple's roadmap under Ternus will show, within two or three release cycles, whether an engineer-led AI strategy closes the gap with OpenAI and Google7. Filings tied to each lab's next funding round should show whether investors reward the hiring pace or price it as risk.
