Meta's Superintelligence Labs shipped its first frontier model on Oct. 12, 2026. The company calls it Muse Wonder1. Zuckerberg built the lab sixteen months earlier, in April 2025, right after Llama 4 landed to a cold reception2. He hired Alexandr Wang, a 29-year-old he won in a bidding war for Scale AI.
Eight of Meta's first fifty hires left within two months of the lab's opening3. More followed through the next year, including the chief AI scientist already on staff when the lab began. Muse Wonder shipped anyway.
The hires that built the lab
Zuckerberg moved fast once he decided to rebuild. He paid Meta $14.3 billion for a 49 percent stake in Scale AI2. The price bought its founder as his new chief AI officer. Wang still runs that lab today.
Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross joined that July4. The pair had just turned down a buyout of their own startup, Safe Superintelligence. Meta hired them instead to help run the new lab. Shengjia Zhao came from OpenAI, where he helped build the first ChatGPT, to become Meta's chief AI scientist5.
Zuckerberg chased Wang personally that spring2. "I talked to like all the leaders of all the labs, like all the heads of research. And I was like, no, Alex is the guy," he told Fortune. He called Wang "the sharpest entrepreneur of his generation, of the ones who I had had a chance to meet."
The recruiting went well past the top names. Meta hired more than fifty researchers and engineers that summer, thirteen of them from Google. Some individual packages reached $100 million3.

Each cube is one hire from Meta's first wave. Magenta cubes are the eight who left within two months. Gray cubes are the rest who stayed past that point.
Implicator.ai's count, citing Business Insider's reporting, put the first wave at more than fifty hires; this chart uses the reported floor of fifty.

The exits that followed
Meta hired fast. Retention came slower. Avi Verma and Ethan Knight returned to OpenAI inside thirty days of joining5.
Rishabh Agarwal left after five months. He announced it on X, in his own words. "I felt the pull to take on a different kind of risk," he wrote5.
Bert Maher left next, after twelve years building PyTorch and Triton at Meta6. "I've decided it's time for a new adventure," he wrote on X in late August. Chaya Nayak followed him out days later, after nearly nine years building Meta's generative AI products, bound for OpenAI3.
Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist and a founder of the field, resigned Nov. 19, 2025, to start his own company7. By January he was criticizing his old team in public. "A lot of people have left, a lot of people who haven't yet left will leave," he told the Financial Times8. He called Wang "young" and "inexperienced," and the new hires "completely LLM-pilled."
One more departure followed in February. Ruoming Pang had led Apple's foundation model team before Meta recruited him for a package worth more than $200 million. He left for OpenAI after seven months anyway9.

The reorganization Meta calls false
Meta restructured the lab twice in its first year. The first split came in August 2025, breaking Superintelligence Labs into four groups3. TBD Lab held the core researchers, FAIR kept LeCun's older research arm, and two more groups covered products and infrastructure.
The second reorganization came in March 2026. Meta created a new Applied AI Engineering unit under Maher Saba, reporting to chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth instead of Wang10. Reports said the move stripped Wang of oversight, and that he had told colleagues he felt "suffocated" by Zuckerberg's scrutiny.
Storyboard18, citing the New York Times, reported a dispute behind the shakeup10. Wang wanted to catch OpenAI and Google's models. Cox and Bosworth favored consumer products built from Facebook and Instagram data.
Meta's spokesperson called the reports wrong. Andy Stone wrote on X: "Totally false," adding that an Indian newspaper "wrongly published something similar, then corrected" before other outlets recycled it11. He said Wang "helped create the new team, still runs MSL and TBD, has growing not waning influence."
Did the bet pay off
Zuckerberg states the number plainly. Meta plans to spend $130 billion to $145 billion on AI infrastructure in 20262. That is nearly double the $72.2 billion it spent the year before. "We're going to write this check for like, I don't know, like $100 billion or $200 billion," he told Fortune.

Wang points to the product. Muse Wonder scores higher than Fable, Opus and Astra on MemoryBench, Meta's own test of long-term recall1. Wang called the model "state-of-the-art based on our measurement for personal and professional agent tasks"2.

LeCun sees a different lesson. He spent years telling Meta that large language models would stop short of real intelligence8. The exits, he says, prove him right.
LeCun's verdict on the new hires was blunt. They are "completely LLM-pilled," he told the Financial Times, all in on a technology he calls "a dead end when it comes to superintelligence."

Both men are describing the same sixteen months. One counts a shipped model. The other counts the people who left to build something else.
What to do
Judge Meta's lab by what ships. Muse Wonder shipped this fall, even with a year of departures behind it.
Watch where researchers land next, too. OpenAI and Anthropic absorbed most of Meta's departures so far, and that tells a recruiter which two labs still win a bidding war.
Check which lab a candidate left, and why. A seven-month exit after a $200 million offer says more about fit than about money.
By the numbers
- $14.3 billion: Meta's price for Alexandr Wang's hire as chief AI officer, June 20252.
- Fifty-plus: researchers and engineers Meta hired before its first wave of departures began3.
- Eight: researchers and engineers who left Meta Superintelligence Labs within two months of its 2025 launch3.
- Nov. 19, 2025: Yann LeCun's last day as Meta's chief AI scientist7.
- $100 million: the top individual pay package Meta offered that summer to win AI researchers3.
- Seven: months Ruoming Pang stayed before trading his $200 million package for a job at OpenAI9.
- Three: frontier and open models the lab shipped in 2026, ending with Muse Wonder on Oct. 1211213.
What to watch
Watch whether Meta's next model ships on schedule. A slip would be the clearest sign the exits finally cost the lab its pace. Watch too whether Wang's public role keeps growing the way Stone described it, or whether Saba's new unit keeps gaining ground11.
