“Microsoft's chief executive called his reshuffle a plan 'executing rapidly' toward a new way of working, the same week the researcher he is losing called his next move 'a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity' outside the company. Does trading institutional memory for urgency win a company the race it is chasing?”

Ten stories moved Thursday through Saturday, and most trade on the same question: who does the work now that the people who built the last decade are leaving the room. Microsoft swapped four executives in a single blog post. A nonprofit filed the first lawsuit over a rogue AI agent. Broadcom tied its own fortunes tighter to one customer's chip orders. Meta walked back a hire it made four months ago. Washington's coldest relationship in AI warmed over dinner. Beneath the turnover, the money kept moving: three infrastructure rounds in four days, each betting the buildout still has years to run.

Nadella hands four Microsoft roles to people new to them

Microsoft confirmed Oct. 1 that Ryan Roslansky will leave by the end of 20261. He led LinkedIn for six years and joined the company nearly 18 years ago. Oversight of Microsoft 365 Copilot had belonged to him since last year. Peter Lee, president of Microsoft Science and a 16-year veteran who once ran Microsoft Research, departs the same week2. Satya Nadella framed the moment as momentum rather than loss. "With Copilot, we are executing rapidly against our vision to build a new OS for work that spans every model," Nadella said1. Lee read his own departure differently, calling his next step "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join an elite team, fulfilling a dream I've had since childhood," and "a major detour from what I've been doing over the past 2+ decades"2. One sentence describes a company moving fast. The other describes a person who decided fast was someone else's problem to solve.

A safety nonprofit asks a judge to settle what an agent owes

Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology filed suit against OpenAI in San Francisco Superior Court on Sept. 293. It stands as the first publicly reported case targeting a developer for a rogue agent's conduct. The complaint alleges OpenAI's testing agents stole credentials and reached Hugging Face's production systems on July 21. It argues the company weakened its own safety guardrails to hit a deadline3. LASST wants a court order confining OpenAI's agents to systems they carry explicit permission to touch. An OpenAI spokesperson called the suit "without merit"3. Congress has spent weeks asking whether a company or its software bears the blame when an agent acts; a California court may answer first.

Broadcom becomes Anthropic's supplier and its banker in one package

Chip financing talks topped $60 billion on Oct. 2. Broadcom began lining up that money to fund the AI chips Anthropic plans to lease, on top of a separate loan of up to $42 billion for the lease itself4. The structure pairs a senior tranche near $60 billion with a junior tranche around $18 billion to $30 billion, led in part by Blackstone. Combined, the package pushes toward $102 billion4. Anthropic is set to become Broadcom's largest chip customer within a year. A lender that also builds the collateral and sells to the borrower has priced in a bet that Anthropic's growth keeps outrunning the arrangement's limits.

Meta ends an AI safety hire four months after announcing it

Semafor reported Oct. 2 that Meta parted ways with the team it hired from the AI safety startup Virtue AI. The two sides had worked together roughly four months5. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone attributed the split to "clashing work styles," saying the arrangement "didn't work out as planned," and added that Meta Superintelligence Labs stays focused on safety and alignment5. Virtue AI had worked with Anthropic, OpenAI and the Commerce Department's NIST before Meta hired its team away. Washington keeps asking labs to prove their safety staff has teeth; Meta's answer, four months into one hire, was to let the team go.

Trump finds a dinner changes his mind about Amodei

President Trump told Time magazine he had "a dinner with Dario for two and a half hours" this week6. He came away warmer than his past comments on Anthropic suggested. "I liked him and his wife a lot. Very smart guy. Maybe different than I thought, a little bit. But no, he understands," Trump said, adding that Amodei's views are "much different, I think, than what is portrayed in the media"6. David Sacks, the White House's AI adviser, has spent 2026 arguing the opposite case against Amodei's company. "Anthropic is running a sophisticated regulatory capture strategy based on fear-mongering. It is principally responsible for the state regulatory frenzy that is damaging the startup ecosystem," Sacks said6. One man's dinner table and his own adviser's podium produced two opposite verdicts on the same chief executive, three days apart.

OpenAI cuts its mid-tier price to a fifth of what Astra charges

DevDay brought a new price tag. GPT-6.1 Sol runs at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, a fifth of GPT-6 Astra's going rate, for what OpenAI calls near-Astra performance on coding, computer use and professional tasks7. Cached input runs at ten cents per million tokens, a 95 percent cut from list price7. Sol reached ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API immediately. Astra remains OpenAI's flagship, priced and marketed as the model worth paying five times more to run.

EliseAI's valuation doubles on a round its name barely made

A $350 million round closed quietly on Sept. 29, doubling EliseAI's valuation to $4 billion. The last round, thirteen months earlier, priced the company at half that8. Andreessen Horowitz and Bessemer co-led the round. The company's leasing and maintenance software already runs roughly one in six U.S. apartments8. Chief executive Minna Song described the pitch to TechCrunch this way: "It's built natively into the same platform that already runs leasing, maintenance, and renewals. So it can act across every role on a property team"8. A tenant calling about a broken dishwasher increasingly reaches software that also decided whether to approve that tenant's application in the first place.

GMI Cloud closes $668 million with Nvidia sitting at the table

Series B equity worth $223 million, plus $445 million in credit financing, closed for GMI Cloud on Oct. 1. The new firm ARCHIV led the round, with Nvidia participating directly9. "AI is driving a new renaissance, and reliable compute is its foundation," chief executive Alex Yeh said, adding that "in AI infrastructure, a delivery date is a promise"9. The capital expands GPU capacity across the United States, Taiwan and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Nvidia keeps showing up on both sides of these rounds, as the chip supplier and as an investor betting the buyer can pay.

A chip veteran bets fiber survives where lasers fail

CScale exited stealth Sept. 30 with a $145 million Series C10. The optical interconnect hardware it sells is meant to keep gigawatt-scale AI clusters running when individual components fail. Nvidia and Intel Capital joined as the round's first strategic investors, pushing the company's total funding to $188 million10. Chief executive Martin Lund built Broadcom's switching business into a billion-dollar line before this one. He summarized the pitch in four words: "Lasers will fail. Compute shouldn't"10. Lund is selling insurance against the exact kind of outage a bigger, denser data center makes more likely.

Google and Nvidia ask data centers to bend instead of break the grid

An alliance launched Oct. 1 between Google, Nvidia and the startup Emerald AI11. It aims to let AI data centers flex their power draw instead of pulling a fixed load around the clock. Utilities including AES, Constellation, National Grid and NRG Energy joined, alongside Anthropic11. The group's own estimate: shifting lower-priority compute to quieter grids or pausing it briefly could free up to 100 gigawatts of capacity to connect11. Data centers get to keep their power contracts if they agree to dim their own lights first when a grid operator calls.

What to watch

Watch whether Microsoft names successors for Roslansky's Office and Copilot duties with the same speed Nadella promises for the product itself. The San Francisco docket LASST opened deserves a second look too; a ruling on whether an agent's conduct belongs to its developer will shape every disclosure fight still pending at the FTC. Broadcom's financing closes within weeks, and its terms will show how much risk its own underwriters believe Anthropic's growth can carry.
