Rep. Yassamin Ansari posted 30 words on X at 1:54 p.m. Eastern on Nov. 4, 2026. Western Digital's stock fell 13.5 percent in Thursday morning trading the next day12.
She called for a pause on advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence. Traders read her post as a sign of what a Democratic Congress might do first.
The Post That Moved a Market
"Top of the Democratic agenda on day 1 needs to be a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of this out of control industry, and a ban on artificial superintelligence," Ansari wrote on X on Nov. 41.
Ansari represents Arizona's 3rd Congressional District, a seat she has held since January 20256.

Western Digital builds the hard drives and flash storage that data centers buy to hold AI training data. Its stock opened Thursday already carrying two soft spots. Analysts had trimmed its fair value estimate from $651 to $613 a share. Company insiders had sold more than 25,000 shares in the prior 90 days2.

Ansari's post landed on top of that. The NASDAQ fell 3.8 percent and the S&P 500 fell 2.17 percent that same Thursday morning, part of a broader selloff. Western Digital's 13.5 percent drop still outran both indexes by a wide margin2.
Why the Panic Waited Until November
Ansari first made the same demands at a Phoenix press conference in September. Markets barely moved then3.
She is one of the lawmakers behind the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act of 2026. Greg Casar introduced the House version, H.R. 10538, on Sept. 24. Bernie Sanders introduced a Senate companion, S. 5493, the day before3.
Both bills remain stuck in committee. The House version sits with Oversight and Government Reform, and the Senate version sits with Commerce, Science and Transportation. Both committees have yet to schedule a first hearing3.

What changed between September and Thursday was the election. Democrats flipped seven Senate seats on Nov. 3 and took what could be their largest House majority in almost two decades5. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer described the mandate the same night. "What we're going to do is lower costs, end all this rampant corruption and end the chaos. Plain and simple," he said.
A bill stuck in committee under a Republican Congress reads one way. The same bill under a Congress its own sponsors help run in January reads differently. Thursday's traders read it that way.
Wall Street Splits on the Panic
Ansari's advocates inside the party see Thursday's selloff as proof her warning lands. Her post traveled through a market already sensitive to AI infrastructure risk. The storage makers most exposed to that buildout paid the price first.
Some analysts reject the link between one post and a double-digit stock drop. Futurum Group's chief executive, Daniel Newman, argued the industry's demand picture had barely moved. "Spoke to a few large semiconductor and infrastructure CEOs and consensus is if the build slows in the U.S. the demand outside the U.S. is more than sufficient. Forecasts remain intact. Location is now fungible," Newman wrote4.
Seagate's own numbers back his case. Chief Executive Dave Mosley told investors on an Oct. 27 earnings call that "the vast majority of our nearline exabyte supply is now allocated under long-term supply agreements through calendar 2028"4. Micron reported more than 75 percent of its fiscal 2027 shipments already committed across 26 customer agreements running through 2030.
A signed supply contract outlasts a committee that has yet to hold a vote. The stocks moved anyway, because political risk prices in before any vote happens.
The Companies Caught in the Crossfire
By midday Thursday, the drop had widened well past Western Digital. SanDisk fell 17.67 percent, Western Digital 17.09 percent, Seagate 14.28 percent and Micron 13.42 percent4.

SanDisk's underlying business gave the selloff little cover. The company's data center revenue reached $4.80 billion in its first quarter, up 61 percent from the prior quarter4. It beat revenue estimates for a sixth straight quarter, at $11.03 billion total revenue. A company beating its own forecasts rarely loses a sixth of its stock value in one session.

What to do
Read the bill texts before you read the stock charts. H.R. 10538 and S. 5493 sit in committee, hearing dates absent from both calendars3. Thursday's drop was a bet on politics, ahead of any new law.
Track the Oversight and Government Reform and Commerce, Science and Transportation committee calendars once the new Congress convenes in January. A scheduled hearing would be the first sign Ansari's post becomes more than 30 words.
Compare the panic to the contracts Micron and Seagate already signed. Micron says most of its fiscal 2027 output is already sold, and Seagate says its capacity runs through 20284. Supply contracts move slower than a stock price, and they tell you more about where the business stands.
By the numbers
- 13.5 percent: Western Digital's drop in Thursday morning trading, Nov. 5, 2026, after Ansari's post began circulating2.
- 30 words: the length of the X post that started the slide1.
- $38: the cut to Western Digital's fair value estimate, from $651 to $613 a share2.
- 54 of 100: Senate seats Democrats will hold starting in January, after flipping seven seats on Nov. 35.
- Micron's fiscal 2027 shipments: more than 75 percent already committed under long-term customer agreements4.
- SanDisk's deepest intraday drop the same Thursday: 17.67 percent4.
- $11.03 billion: SanDisk's total revenue for the quarter it reported days before the selloff4.
What to watch
Watch the Oversight and Government Reform and Commerce, Science and Transportation committees. A first hearing date would land once the new Congress convenes in January. Storage stocks rallying before that hearing would say the market moved on politics alone. Ansari's next post could move the sector again before a single vote gets cast.
