Anthropic lost $80.7 billion in the first half of 20261. The number leaked. It came from the company's own books, ahead of any announcement, and its public filing has yet to post.
Chief executive Dario Amodei is steering that company toward a public listing anyway, confidential filing already in hand. Chubby, who posts as @kimmonismus on X, wrote Monday morning that "Anthropic could make public the paperwork for its initial public offering as early as Monday"7.

Investors stopped waiting for it. Some now value Anthropic's November listing near $1.5 trillion. That is half a trillion below the $2 trillion figure attendees expected only weeks earlier3.
The Filing Still Waits to Post
Anthropic filed confidentially with the SEC in June8. It has reviewed that filing in private since then, and the public version stayed off EDGAR through Monday morning.
Reporting pointed to Friday as a possible filing day8. That day passed quietly. Monday brought a fresh guess instead. It came from the same corner of social media that has tracked every leak so far7.
Securities rules set a waiting period before investor pitching can begin8. That stretch still points toward the November debut on Nasdaq that Anthropic has targeted for weeks2.
Investors Already Cut the Price
Slower growth drove the new number. Anthropic told investors its third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion3. That was a slimmer jump than the quarter before.
The second quarter, $11.6 billion, had more than doubled from the first1. Anthropic's own half-year total, $16.3 billion, puts the first quarter near a third of the second.

Growth that size still beats almost every company at its scale. Doubling once, then growing again, is rare air for a business this large. Investors who sat through the faster quarter wanted a repeat. The slower one left them weighing a smaller number instead3.
The $1.5 trillion guess is one of several numbers in play. New Constructs, a research firm, puts Anthropic's fair value far lower5. That number assumes even a fast-growth case. Investors who held the higher line through September now sit between two sharply different stories3.

The Loss Behind the Markdown
Whatever price investors settle on, the leaked loss figure will likely reappear in the real filing. Anthropic's first-half net loss ran to $80.7 billion1. Most of that, $72 billion, came from one paper charge.
That charge is a markup on convertible notes, and it climbs whenever Anthropic's own valuation climbs.
Strip that charge away, and Anthropic's operating loss for the half sits closer to $9 billion1. That nearly matches what it burned on compute alone those six months, up from just $7.3 billion the year before2.
The company has promised far more ahead. Anthropic has committed roughly $450 billion over ten years to Google, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft1. The split runs $111 billion, $110 billion and $31 billion. Signing every option still on the table could add hundreds of billions more2.
A Blackstone-led debt facility, closed this October, bridges the gap between those cloud bills and the cash Anthropic earns today2.

Amazon and Alphabet sit on both sides of that spending. Each one invests in Anthropic, supplies its compute and, more each quarter, competes with it too. Amazon's chief executive, Andy Jassy, told analysts in July that Amazon is pursuing its own frontier model3. That is the kind of system Anthropic sells.
Two Readings of the Same Markdown
A smaller price tag reads two ways. Kevin Roose, a New York Times technology columnist, made one case on the Big Technology Podcast. He argued the cut barely touches Alphabet's own math. "They own like 12% of Anthropic and like they're gonna be fine," Roose said4.

At $1.5 trillion, that roughly 12 percent stake is worth about $180 billion4. Alphabet earned $132 billion in all of 2025. A markdown like that still leaves a backer holding real gains. That reads as a shrug from where Alphabet sits, short of a crisis.
Kyle Guske II, a senior investment analyst at New Constructs, reads the same figure differently. He argues the markdown has further to run, and investors who grasp Anthropic's limited pricing power, Guske says, will reach one conclusion5. "No amount of revenue growth will make it profitable enough to deserve an IPO valuation anywhere close to $2 trillion," he wrote.
Even if Anthropic's revenue grows tenfold this year and doubles again next year, New Constructs puts fair value today at $144 billion5. That is a 93 percent discount to the original target, and Roose and Guske read the same markdown. They land on opposite verdicts.
What to do
Treat the leaked loss and the public filing as two separate facts. The number will probably survive the move from leak to document. Still, check it against Anthropic's own filing. Do that before repeating the figure in a client memo or a board deck.
Watch the price Anthropic actually sets in November, and compare it against the range investors floated in October. A $1.5 trillion debut and a $144 billion fair-value model point to very different futures. Every company that supplies or competes with Anthropic, your own vendors included, is reading the same gap.
By the numbers
- $1.5 trillion: the valuation some investors now discuss for Anthropic's listing, down from $2 trillion weeks earlier3.
- Half a trillion dollars: how far that estimate fell, according to people close to the talks3.
- Anthropic's net loss for the first half of 2026 reached $80.7 billion. $72 billion of that is a paper charge on convertible notes1.
- Revenue for the third quarter reached $16.8 billion, up from the second quarter's $11.6 billion3.
- $450 billion: Anthropic's committed cloud spending over ten years, split among Google, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft1.
- New Constructs calculates a fair value of $144 billion for Anthropic, even under a fast-growth scenario5.
- Anthropic's Wikipedia entry logged 5,285 page views on Oct. 25, 2026, the day before the filing watch began6.
What to watch
Watch EDGAR for the public filing itself. A loss figure that survives the move from leak to filing would settle one open question. The November pricing matters too. A debut nearer the lower guess would favor Roose's math, while a debut nearer New Constructs' model would favor Guske's.
