Claude Starts Reading Bank Accounts, Stays Read-Only

Anthropic's new Claude feature reads a bank balance and two years of spending, but security researchers say read-only access still leaves a risk standing.

“Twenty-two thousand people liked Anthropic's announcement before most of them opened the fine print on what Claude can see inside a bank account. Does a read-only promise cover every risk of handing a chatbot two years of spending?”

Anthropic opened Claude's eyes to a bank account this week. The company calls the feature Personal Finance, and it rolled out in beta on Thursday1. A user links a bank through Plaid, a service that connects apps to bank accounts. Claude then answers money questions in plain words.

A busy reader already asks Claude to draft an email or sum up a meeting. Banking questions join that same list now2.

Access stays read-only. Claude reads a balance and up to 24 months of spending. Moving money, managing accounts, and making investments stay off its list2.

What Claude Reads, and Where It Stops

Claude reads a bank's name, an account's type, and its last four digits3. It sees balances, credit limits, and two years of transactions, each one tagged with a date, a merchant, and a category.

The tool flags duplicate charges on its own. Bills that keep climbing month over month get caught too5.

A user can link up to 16 banks at once3. Unlinking one stops Claude from reading it right away. The last unlink wipes the whole dashboard with it.

Investment holdings stay outside Claude's reach. Loan rates and the fine print on a mortgage stay out too3. Anthropic built Personal Finance around checking and credit accounts instead of a full financial file.

Personal Finance works inside Claude's website, its desktop app, and its phone apps for iOS and Android3. For now, it stays limited to banks inside the United States.

Why Anthropic Built It This Way

Claude's design carries Dario Amodei's company-wide rule against ads. Personal Finance skips sponsored picks, and it skips Anthropic's own credit cards, loans, and savings products too2. A straight answer was the goal here, over a sales pitch.

Anthropic calls this just a start. "We think people are best served by Claude working alongside the licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust," the company wrote2. It asked banks and wealth managers to help build what comes next.

Plaid built the pipe underneath. Its chief technology officer, Will Robinson, wrote about the launch the same day it shipped9. "Most people don't need more financial information. They need help making sense of it," Robinson wrote.

The same wager already played out once, elsewhere. OpenAI gave ChatGPT a matching bank link on May 15, 2026, through the same company, Plaid10. That version reached more than 12,000 financial institutions on a Pro plan priced at $200 a month.

The Case Against Trusting It

Security researchers raised this exact worry back in May, the week OpenAI's version shipped7. Diana Kelley, chief information security officer at Noma Security, granted the safety case before she cut against it. "View only is meaningfully safer than an agent that can move money or change accounts… view-only does not mean low-risk: if someone takes over your ChatGPT account, they may get a consolidated picture of your balances, spending, investments, debts, goals and financial history," Kelley said.

Ridhi Shetty raised a second worry, about the data itself. She works as senior policy counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology7. "Even if ChatGPT's new feature doesn't access full account numbers or have the ability to make changes to financial accounts, the financial information it does collect can reveal deeply personal details about a person's life, habits, vulnerabilities, and relationships," Shetty wrote.

Claude's version mirrors ChatGPT's almost exactly. Plaid sits underneath both, and a read-only promise sits on top of both1310. Kelley's and Shetty's warnings landed on OpenAI's design in May, yet they fit Anthropic's new one just as well.

Read plainly, their warning points at one weak spot. A single stolen password, in that scenario, could hand a thief months of spending habits sitting in one chat window.

A Rival Calls It a Copy

Anthony Pompliano runs Silvia, a startup that calls itself a personal AI chief financial officer8. He told Decrypt that Anthropic had studied his company closely before this week's launch. "Anthropic was fishing for details on how we built our product and why it was so popular," Pompliano wrote.

He called the result a copy wearing a different name. "Today, Anthropic launched a Claude wrapper that is masquerading as a personal finance product," Pompliano wrote8. Anthropic stayed quiet about his claim in public.

Pompliano says Silvia runs its own models built for the job, at a cost he puts 97 percent below frontier AI prices8. That cost gap, true or overstated, is the bet a small finance startup is racing a giant on.

What to do

Name what you would gain and what you would expose before you link an account. Claude answers budgeting questions fast, and the tool skips the sales pitch other finance apps often carry.

Check the unlink button before you ever press connect. Anthropic built it to cut access right away, and unlinking your last bank clears the whole dashboard with it.

Compare the entry price too. Access starts on Anthropic's $20 Pro plan, a fraction of the $200 a month OpenAI charged when its own version shipped.

By the numbers

  • $20: the price of Claude's cheapest plan that includes Personal Finance, Pro, against $200 for OpenAI's matching tier410.
  • 16 banks: the most a single Claude account can link at once3.
  • 24 months: how far back Claude can read a linked account's transactions3.
  • 22,520 favorites: landed on Claude's announcement post on X within hours1.
  • Six points: what Hacker News gave the launch, against those thousands of favorites on X6.
  • 174 days: the gap between OpenAI's version, launched May 15, and Anthropic's, launched Nov. 5101.

What to watch

Banks and wealth managers may answer Anthropic's open call to help shape its next finance features2. Claude's place inside Apple's Productivity chart is worth a second look too, once the bump from a new feature fades. It sat third the day Personal Finance arrived11. A second account breach at either company would test Kelley's warning against a real case instead of a hypothetical one.
