Elon Musk said on Nov. 1 that Grok Bot costs more to run than it earns. He wrote it to a subscriber who said their allowance ran out early. "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue," Musk wrote1.
The reply went to a user posting as @DogecoinNorway. They said their usage sat at 100 percent, with four days left before the weekly reset2.
Doge Norway@DogecoinNorwayFuck me, my Grok Bot usage is 100% and it’s 4 days till reset. WTF happened? Normally I don’t even reach 100%. pic.twitter.com/2RHnjq069I
Musk answered in public, hours later, on the same platform where the complaint had landed.

His post had drawn more than 6,700 likes within two days, against 235 on the complaint it answered12. He left it there, leaving out any figure for the cost or the revenue he weighed against each other.
The admission came just 12 days after Musk told investors that Grok Bot's growth was the fastest he had ever seen. His other products grew slower than this.
Payers Crossed 800,000 Right Before the Caps
Demand kept climbing. Paid weekly users passed 800,000 in early October, more than double the prior month. Musk and Shotwell, SpaceX's president, said so on Oct. 203.
Daily users climbed for 16 straight days, the agent's longest growth streak since its August launch. They went from fewer than 100,000 in early September to more than 600,000 by Oct. 265.

Shotwell told investors the business side was growing even faster. SpaceX itself keeps expanding fast. The whole company's third-quarter revenue reached $14.6 billion, up 161 percent from a year earlier3. "B2B is our fastest-growing category with companies increasingly using Grok bot as a force multiplier across sales, marketing, IT and engineering, treating it as an always-on teammate for complex end-to-end workflows," she said.
Grok Enterprise customers paying more than $1 million a year, including the coding tool Cursor, grew 50 percent from the prior quarter alone.

Gavin Baker founded the investment firm Atreides Management. He said in September that Grok Bot had already changed how he worked. "Grok Bot is becoming another watershed moment in artificial intelligence following ChatGPT," Baker said6. Investors such as Baker read the caps as a growth problem: the agent got too popular for its own price tag.
Where a Flat Price Breaks Down
Grok Bot comes bundled inside The X Subscription. Prices start at $30 a month for Premium and run to $200 for Ultra7. That price stays fixed whether a subscriber sends it one question or sets it running all day. Usage varies wildly.
The agent sits only inside paid tiers, unlike Grok's chat mode. Every single user already pays something toward the bill. A chat window answers once. An agent keeps going.
It can research a topic, draft the write-up, and browse the web on its own. Every step asks a model to think. xAI pays for every one, whether the subscriber pays $30 or $200.

Two customers on the same $30 plan can cost xAI very differently. One checks Grok Bot twice a day. The other leaves it running errands for hours, burning tokens the whole time.
OpenAI hit the same math in its own enterprise plans. It moved ChatGPT Enterprise off flat per-message pricing in August, saying the change would mean "usage pricing is standardized across all product surfaces"8. xAI kept Grok Bot's price flat through Nov. 1. Its fix was to tighten the weekly allowance for its heaviest users instead.
The Case This Looks Reckless
Analysts disagreed. Harrison Rolfes watches spending across the biggest AI labs for PitchBook. In May he compared xAI's own numbers to a traditional software company's. "If you compare xAI to a traditional SaaS company, the financials look reckless," Rolfes said4.
That assessment predates Grok Bot's caps by months, and it weighed xAI's whole balance sheet. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, xAI posted an operating loss of $2,470 million against revenue of just $818 million. That gap equaled 17 percent of SpaceX's total revenue that quarter4.

The gray bar is the revenue xAI earned; the magenta bar is the size of the operating loss it posted against that revenue, both in millions of dollars.
The loss reflects xAI's full build-out spending, since SpaceX reports Grok Bot's own costs inside xAI's broader results.

Most of that loss traces to data centers and chips. That spending has little to do with one product's subscribers.
Shotwell's enterprise numbers point at xAI's preferred fix. Sell Grok Bot to companies paying $1 million a year apiece, where price can track usage. That beats one flat plan sold to individual subscribers.
Whether that revenue grows fast enough to close a multibillion-dollar gap is the real question. Rolfes raised it, and Musk's post left it standing.
What to Do
If Grok Bot sits inside your own work, watch your weekly allowance closely. Treat it as a budget line with a hard end. Musk's own words say xAI is watching the cost of its heaviest users. A published usage limit or a price increase could follow this one.
Before you commit a team to any flat-rate AI agent, ask the vendor one question. How does it price a heavy user against a light one? Grok Bot's cap shows what happens when that question goes unanswered until the bill forces it.
By the Numbers
- 800,000: Grok Bot's paid weekly users in early October, more than double the prior month3.
- 600,000: its daily active users by Oct. 26, up from fewer than 100,000 in early September5.
- $14.6 billion: SpaceX's total revenue in the third quarter, up 161 percent from a year earlier3.
- 50 percent: Grok Enterprise's quarterly growth in customers paying more than $1 million a year3.
- $30: the price of SpaceX's cheapest plan that includes Grok Bot, set this way since Oct. 127.
- 17 percent: xAI's first-quarter operating loss as a share of SpaceX's revenue that quarter4.
What to Watch
Watch for xAI to publish a hard number for Grok Bot's weekly allowance, kept private so far. Grok Enterprise's growth rate next quarter will test Shotwell's fix for an agent that costs more than it charges. Token-based billing, already OpenAI's answer to the same math, may spread next from enterprise plans to consumer ones.
