Elon Musk wrote on X on Saturday, Oct. 4, that SpaceX is a super intelligence company, and agreed to rename its AI unit from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI1415. Five days earlier, Donald Trump had ordered federal agencies to say "Super Intelligence" in place of "Artificial Intelligence"11. This piece is sponsored by si-infra.com, which tracks the public record on superintelligence and published its own reading of the SpaceX filings on Oct. 418. The AILately.com Desk read the same filings and asked a narrower question: what does the money say a super intelligence company is?
The money says it is a data center business bolted to a rocket business. In the second quarter of 2026, SpaceX spent $18.37 billion on capital projects, and $15.83 billion of that went to AI, about 86 percent1. Starlink still pays the bills. Of SpaceX's $18.7 billion in 2025 revenue, Connectivity earned $11.4 billion, Space $4.0 billion and AI $3.2 billion5.

How a rocket company came to own Grok
SpaceX bought xAI on Feb. 2, 2026, in an all-stock deal that valued SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion3. Musk described the merger that day in a statement Reuters carried: "This marks not just the next chapter, but the next book in SpaceX and xAI's mission: scaling to make a sentient sun to understand the Universe and extend the light of consciousness to the stars!"3. Read the nouns. A sun, a universe and a light arrive before any product does, and the filing that followed describes chips.
The same week, SpaceX asked the Federal Communications Commission for authority to launch up to 1 million data-center satellites, solar-powered and optically linked, between 500 and 2,000 kilometers up4. Via Satellite reported SpaceX's own projection of 100 kilowatts of compute per tonne launched, with the deployment date left open4. On the Aug. 4 earnings call, Musk put a year on it: "This is not some sort of far-future, distant thing, we expect to start launching these next year."8
Customers signed before any satellite flew. Anthropic announced on May 6 that it had agreed "to use all of the compute capacity at their Colossus 1 data center," more than 300 megawatts and over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs, at $1.25 billion a month through May 2029616. Google followed on June 5 at $920 million a month from October 2026 to June 2029, about 110,000 GPUs, which Google called "a short-term, timely agreement to ensure we have bridge capacity to meet surging customer demand for our agent platform, Gemini Enterprise."7. Fortune put the two contracts together at about $26 billion a year16.

The quarter that moved the stock
SpaceX listed on Nasdaq as SPCX on June 12 at $135 a share, raising about $75 billion in the offering and $25 billion more in bonds ten days later59. Its first quarterly report as a public company landed on Aug. 4: revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92 percent, a net loss of $541 million, adjusted EBITDA of $3.5 billion, and $14.1 billion of contracted cloud sales1. Chief financial officer Bret Johnsen called the quarter proof of "significant margin expansion led by our new AI compute agreements"19.
Investors read the capital line instead. AI capital spending had doubled from $7.7 billion in the first quarter to $15.83 billion in the second, and the stock fell 13.6 percent the next day to $108.27, its lowest close9. Doug Anmuth of JPMorgan wrote that day: "We now project capex of nearly $200B in both 2027 & 2028"9. By Oct. 2 the shares had climbed back to $158.96, and they closed at $171.92 on Oct. 6, two days after the rename10.

1.4 gigawatts on file, and 2 promised
What SpaceX has that most AI companies lack is a number certified in an SEC filing. Johnsen told analysts on Aug. 4: "We ended the second quarter with 1.4 gigawatts of nameplate compute... We expect to end this year at over 2 gigawatts of compute capacity."8. A year earlier the figure stood at 0.4 gigawatts8. Nameplate counts the GPUs installed multiplied by their full power draw, so it measures chips in racks, and the 10-Q says it "does not represent actual power consumption or utilization"2.
The sponsor's own analysis sets that figure against a definition. Its ledger asks for ten gigawatts acting as one machine before it calls a system superintelligent, and by its arithmetic SpaceX's filed 1.4 gigawatts covers about 14 percent of the way18. Starlink, meanwhile, grew from 2.3 million subscribers at the end of 2023 to 4.4 million a year later, 8.9 million at the end of 2025, 10.3 million on March 31 and 12.0 million on June 30, 202651.

The case that the rename fits the books
Ali Javaheri, a senior analyst for emerging spaces at PitchBook, told Reuters on the day of the merger what the combination buys: "Starlink was already a cash flow engine and now it adds an AI revenue layer on top while also becoming a distribution surface for AI services and data."3. His verb is "adds." On that reading, the AI unit is a second business paid for by the first, and the 86 percent capital share is the price of building it before the customers arrive.
Musk made the same case on the earnings call in a single sentence about pace: "By the end of next year, it's not clear to me that there's anything that digital at least that AI won't be able to do based on the current rate of improvement."8. A company that believes that sentence spends the way SpaceX spent in the second quarter.
The case that the rename runs ahead of the books
Pravin Pradeep of Frost & Sullivan drew the line before the IPO, in Via Satellite's assessment of the AI pitch: "Whether that framing holds depends entirely on whether xAI can compete with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, which is far from certain."12. Renting chips to Anthropic and Google shows the chips exist. It also means two of the three rivals Pradeep names are SpaceX's largest AI customers, and the filings report zero model results that put Grok ahead of them.
The orbital plan draws the sharpest critic. Brian McManus, the aeronautical engineer behind Real Engineering, told Futurism in June: "Billionaires will attempt to pull the rug over your eyes and convince you that this technology makes total sense, but reality is, this technology is dumb."13. Morningstar's analysts valued the company at $780 billion in June, under half its offer valuation, and TheStreet reported their view that the shares are "overvalued in almost any scenario, at least in the near term"17.
What the word changes
Trump's order of Sept. 29 states its reason in one line: "The capabilities of today's frontier systems do much more than imitate or automate discrete aspects of human intelligence."11. It directs the executive branch to use "Super Intelligence" and "SI" wherever the law allows, and gives agencies 60 days to draft legislative language11. Musk's post followed the order by five days, and three outlets reported his words three different ways, so The AILately.com Desk quotes the fact of the post rather than its text1415.
A rename changes a logo, a ticker description and the vocabulary of press releases. The filings change on their own schedule, and the next one, the third-quarter 10-Q, is where the question gets its first answer: whether nameplate compute passes 1.4 gigawatts on the way to the promised 2, and whether the Anthropic and Google contracts, which run for years, hold through the quarter.
By the numbers
- AI took $15.83 billion of SpaceX's $18.37 billion in second-quarter capital spending, about 86 percent1
- Revenue in 2025 reached $18.7 billion: Connectivity earned $11.4 billion, Space $4.0 billion and AI $3.2 billion5
- Nameplate compute stood at 1.4 gigawatts at June 30, 2026, up from 0.4 a year earlier, with over 2 promised by year end8
- Starlink grew from 2.3 million subscribers at the end of 2023 to 12.0 million at June 30, 2026, passing 4.4 million and 8.9 million at the ends of 2024 and 2025 and 10.3 million at March 3151
- Anthropic pays $1.25 billion a month through May 2029 and Google $920 million a month from October 2026 to June 20296716
- SPCX closed at $108.27 on Aug. 5 against a $135 offer and recovered to $158.96 by Oct. 2 and $171.92 by Oct. 610
What to watch
- The third-quarter 10-Q, due in November, carries the nameplate compute line to set against the 2 gigawatt promise8.
- A measured power figure or an outside evaluation of a Grok model would speak to Pradeep's test12.
- Musk placed the first launch of a compute satellite in 2027 on the Aug. 4 call8.
- SpaceXAI's website still read SpaceXAI on Oct. 4, so the rename itself remains a date to record15.
si-infra.com sponsored this piece and left the reporting, the sources and the conclusions to The AILately.com Desk, which chose every number. The figures above follow si-infra.com's graphics so the two readings sit side by side.
