Grok Imagine posted the first episode of an AI-made Odyssey series on X late Friday, Oct. 231. Elon Musk, xAI's chief executive, shared it hours later3. The film runs seven minutes, in 4K, and retells Homer's epic through a bearded Odysseus, a wooden horse and black-sailed ships.
Two posts about the episode drew close to 34,000 combined likes within a day23. Named viewers split hard on whether the result plays as a story worth watching45.
Why Musk Built His Own Odyssey
Musk's project began as a complaint about someone else's movie. Christopher Nolan released his own live-action Odyssey on July 17, 2026, with a reported budget of $250 million6. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in May that Lupita Nyong'o would play both Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra9.

Musk objected before that confirmation landed. In February, online speculation that Nyong'o would play Helen of Troy drew racist backlash, and Musk amplified it8. He had already called the casting proof that "Chris Nolan has lost his integrity".
Whoopi Goldberg answered him on "The View" the same week. "I would suggest looking in a mirror if you have any concerns about people's looks, if this is where we're going," she told her co-hosts8.

By July, Musk raised the stakes. He posted that before the year ends, Grok Imagine "will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer"6. Musk called Nolan's film an act of someone "pissing on Homer's grave." He also offered Mel Gibson $100 million for a version with dialogue "taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek," he wrote.
What Episode 1 Actually Shows
Grok Imagine credited the episode to three names: Grok Imagine itself, Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker12. Wonder Studios makes original films and commercials outside the AI business. The studio wrote, "Homer didn't have Grok… we do," framing the collaboration as a new tool rather than a replacement.
The film opens with a bearded Odysseus in a dark cloak. Beside him, a woman holds an infant. A small carved horse sits on a table, a token of the trick that ends the war. Near the close, black-sailed ships cross a gray sea1.

Grok Imagine left the episode count and the next date open1. It asked viewers in the comments whether they wanted a full breakdown of the production process.
The episode landed in a busy week for Grok. Days earlier, the account posted a character-creation guide for animated AI videos1. xAI also opened a partner network this week, to bring Grok to larger businesses.
A Viral Weekend, by the Numbers
The episode's own numbers tell a clear story. Grok Imagine's original post drew 16,088 likes, 1,779 reposts and 1,254 replies within a day2. Musk's quote-post pulled in 17,879 likes on its own, 1,791 more than the original3.

Viewers Split, and Say So by Name
Mike Gannotti, who posts about AI filmmaking workflows on X, called the episode real progress. "Okay, the Odyssey thing is legit. Episode 1 of an Odyssey series, made with Grok Imagine, and it runs about seven minutes," he wrote4. He wanted the full production workflow, past the trailer footage.
Laurence Moroney is Arm's director of AI and a former lead of Google's TensorFlow advocacy5. He read the same episode and asked a harder question. "How long can an AI-made story hold your attention?" he wrote. "Grok Imagine just released Episode 1 of its Odyssey series, a roughly seven-minute film made with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. Video models generate in short clips, so a piece this long depends on the director: shot planning, continuity, pacing and the edit," he added.
Other named viewers landed between those two poles, praising the visuals while flagging flat voice work and fast cuts10. A finished movie, if Musk delivers one, will face that same split at ten times the length.
The Money Behind Both Odysseys
Grok Imagine built Episode 1 on contest money rather than a studio payroll. In August, the company asked users to submit their own AI-made Odyssey scenes for a $100,000 prize7. Nem Perez won it with a five-minute scene built around Odysseus and the nymph Calypso.
"This is The Odyssey as Homer intended," Perez wrote of the winning entry, in a post Digital Camera World quoted. "My longest, most intricate work to date. I pushed Grok Imagine to its absolute limits to create this five-minute epic"7.
Mike Harris reviewed the contest footage for Digital Camera World. He praised Perez's effort and stayed skeptical of the format. "I'm not a fan of AI-generated content and instead much prefer traditional filmmaking," he wrote. "Heck, last night I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in the theater"7.
The dollar figures around the two Odysseys stayed far apart. Nolan's reported production budget ran $250 million6. Musk's offer to fund a Mel Gibson version topped out at $100 million. Grok Imagine's own contest paid its winner $100,0007.

Each column is one dollar figure: the taller column is Nolan's reported production budget, the shorter column is what Musk offered to fund his own historically accurate version.
Grok Imagine's own contest paid its winner $100,000, a separate figure too small to plot honestly on the same scale as these two production budgets.

What to Do
Check the engagement number against the claim it supports. Grok Imagine's 16,088 likes and Musk's 17,879 likes prove the post traveled. They say little about whether the film works as film.
Read past the anonymous reactions to the named ones. Gannotti and Moroney watched the same seven minutes and reached different verdicts, and both put their names on the record45. That split, named and dated, tells a reader more than a wall of unnamed comments.
Weigh the dollars behind the headline, too. A $100,000 prize and a $250 million production budget are both real figures67. The gap between them marks how far Grok Imagine still has to travel.
By the Numbers
- 16,088 likes landed on Grok Imagine's original post about Episode 1, in its first day on X2.
- Musk's quote-post of the same episode pulled in 17,879 likes on its own3.
- Seven minutes: the length of Episode 1, posted in 4K resolution1.
- Christopher Nolan's reported budget for his live-action Odyssey, released July 17, ran $250 million6.
- Mel Gibson's promised version, the one Musk offered to fund, carried a $100 million price tag6.
- $100,000 is the prize Grok Imagine paid Nem Perez for the winning entry in its August contest7.
What to Watch
Musk's July promise still carries a deadline: a full movie "before this year ends"6. Watch whether Episode 2 arrives before that date closes. See, too, whether Grok Imagine ever posts the production breakdown both Moroney and Gannotti asked for45.
