Can a promise still protect a company the bond market is betting against? Nvidia is finding out this month.
Nvidia built the chips that started the AI boom. It now bankrolls the companies that run them, with $171.5 billion in direct cash, guarantees and contract commitments1. This week, for the first time, credit traders priced one of those partners for failure.
A Guarantee Built on Someone Else's Books
Only $7 billion of Nvidia's $171.5 billion sits as direct cash in its partners1. The remaining $164.5 billion is a promise. Nvidia will buy unused compute, cover a lease if a tenant walks, or backstop a loan8.

Nvidia already holds $99 billion in shares of companies that buy its chips. The Information found that figure in Nvidia's own filings8. One commitment covers CoreWeave directly: Nvidia will buy up to $6.3 billion of its spare computing capacity, if every other customer passes.
That promise is the whole bet. Nvidia's chips hold their value, Jensen Huang argues, so a struggling customer's compute gets rented to someone else. The test is whether a renter actually shows up before the bills come due.
Paper promises cost little to write. Honoring one, dollar for dollar, is the part markets now watch.
The Swaps Market Starts Pricing a Default
CoreWeave is the partner that test hits first. Its stock fell as much as 17 percent on Oct. 14, and its bonds due in 2032 touched a 15 percent yield the same day4.
Its five-year credit default swap spread is the price traders pay to insure against its debt. That spread started October near 824 basis points. It climbed to 1,145 by Oct. 21, up 39 percent for the month13. Gavan Nolan, who prices fixed income at S&P Global Market Intelligence, watches that number closely.

Each dot is one reading of CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread. The gray dot is where it started October, the magenta dot is where it stood on Oct. 21, and the rod is the climb between them.
The Oct. 1 reading is estimated by reversing October's reported 39 percent rise from the Oct. 21 level.

CoreWeave "has capital expenditure levels that are almost hyperscaler-like, but it doesn't have the hyperscaler balance sheet," Nolan said4. A level above 1,000 basis points reads as credit distress on his own desk. CoreWeave's spread implies roughly 64 percent odds of default within five years, under the market's own pricing model1.

Elon Musk, the chief executive of SpaceX and Tesla, needed one word for the chart that started the slide. He replied to a bond-yield chart on X with "Yikes"4.

Huang's Defense Meets a Falling Backlog
Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, read the same data differently at the company's GTC conference in Berlin. "There's just so much demand across so many sectors of AI, there's a scarcity of capital," Huang said2.

Andrew Keches, a credit analyst at Barclays, warned clients to watch "the speed at which AI vibes are shifting on a day-to-day basis"3. He was describing corporate debt broadly. The swaps market moved on CoreWeave first anyway.
CoreWeave's own chief executive, Mike Intrator, wrote to staff after the Oct. 14 rout. "When you are building a new type of technology company, there will be periods of time when the market misunderstands and acts irrationally," Intrator wrote7. He told staff the company's deal backlog runs large enough to cover its debt. Intrator said he trusts CoreWeave's customers and its own execution.
The Fallout Already on the Ground
Two deals broke the same week Huang spoke in Berlin, each apart from CoreWeave entirely. Microsoft pulled its anchor commitment from Nscale's planned data center in Loughton, England5. Grid operators had told Nscale that full power waits until the 2030s. Nscale's own filings had counted close to $43.8 billion of Microsoft work tied to projects like it.

SK hynix halted its review of a U.S. listing for Solidigm, the flash-memory unit meant to fund a new fab for AI memory demand6. Shareholders worried a sale would dilute their stake, and Korean rules on split listings added a second obstacle.
A third neocloud, Firmus, pulled its own stock listing this month8. Nvidia is now discussing a direct investment to keep Firmus funded. Three separate plans broke in ten days, all before CoreWeave itself missed a single payment.
What to do
Check which of your own AI vendors lean on CoreWeave, Nebius or a similar neocloud for capacity. Ask what happens to your contract if that supplier's financing tightens further. A vendor's price list means less than its balance sheet right now.
Read Nvidia's next quarterly filing for its guarantee total alongside its revenue line. A number that keeps growing past $171.5 billion measures risk sitting one step removed from Nvidia's own books. The revenue line can look strong the whole time.
By the numbers
- Nvidia's total exposure to its AI cloud partners: $171.5 billion, split $7 billion direct and the rest in guarantees1.
- Shares Nvidia already holds in companies that buy its chips are worth $99 billion8.
- CoreWeave compute Nvidia has promised to buy, when every other customer passes, totals $6.3 billion8.
- CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread reached 1,145 basis points on Oct. 21, up 39 percent for the month13.
- That spread implies five-year default odds near 64 percent, under the market's own pricing model1.
- CoreWeave's 2032 bonds touched a 15 percent yield on Oct. 144.
- Nscale's filings tied $43.8 billion of Microsoft work to projects including the site Microsoft just left5.
What to watch
Watch for a rating firm outside Nvidia or CoreWeave to publish its own default number. The swaps market sets the price alone for now. A published rating would show whether traders or Huang read the risk correctly.
A second signal is Nvidia's direct talks with Firmus. Any new investment there would add one more guarantee to Nvidia's books, the same shape of promise now being tested at CoreWeave.
CoreWeave's own bond yield offers a third signal. A drop back toward where it started October would say the panic passed. Climbing past 15 percent again would say the market still disagrees with Huang.
