“Nvidia backs its biggest cloud partners with $171.5 billion, almost all of it guarantees rather than cash. Credit markets now price one of those partners, CoreWeave, near 64 percent odds of default inside five years. Does a guarantee still protect a company the market is betting against?”

Ten AI stories moved today. Three of them share one thread.

Nvidia built the chips that started the AI boom. It now finances the companies that run them. This week, for the first time, the credit market priced one of those companies for failure. Read the rest of today's ten against that backdrop.

Nvidia's Backstop Meets a Market That Doubts It

Nvidia has put $171.5 billion behind its AI cloud partners1. Only $7 billion of that is direct cash. The rest, $164.5 billion, sits as guarantees on its partners' own books.

CoreWeave is the partner credit traders now doubt most. Its five-year credit default swap spread started October near 824 basis points. It spiked intraday to 1,194.5 on Oct. 15, then settled near 1,145, a 39 percent climb for the month1. A spread that high implies roughly 64 percent odds the company defaults within five years, under the market's own pricing model.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia's chief executive, says the fear runs too high. Speaking at the company's GTC conference in Berlin, he called demand for cloud capacity huge. "There's just so much demand across so many sectors of AI, there's a scarcity of capital," Huang said2.

Andrew Keches, a credit analyst at Barclays, reads the same market differently. He warned clients about "the speed at which AI vibes are shifting on a day-to-day basis"3. Traders are pricing this risk now, ahead of the engineers.

Microsoft Walks From a Flagship Nscale Site

The software giant pulled its anchor commitment from Nscale's planned data center in Loughton, England4. That deal would have rented 23,000 Nvidia chips at the site.

Grid power forced the decision. UK Power Networks told Nscale a full connection waits until the 2030s. Nscale's own filings had counted close to $43.8 billion of Microsoft work tied to projects like it4. Its wider ties to Microsoft stay intact, the company says.

SK Hynix Shelves Solidigm's Listing

The chipmaker SK hynix halted its review of a U.S. listing for Solidigm, its flash-memory unit5. Solidigm needed the money to build a new fab for AI memory demand.

Shareholders worried a share sale would dilute their stake. Korean rules on split listings added a second obstacle. The chipmaker's own shares rose about 4 percent the day it dropped the plan5.

Each point is where CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread stood that day. S&P Global calls any level past 1,000 basis points credit distress, a line the spread crossed in October.

The Oct. 1 value is estimated by reversing October's reported 39 percent rise from the Oct. 21 level; only the Oct. 15 and Oct. 21 readings are published figures.

Texas Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT's Harms

Attorney General Ken Paxton sued OpenAI and Sam Altman on Oct. 23, in a Collin County court6. He says ChatGPT misled Texans about its own safety.

Paxton's own filing states the harm in one breath: "Mass shooters have been aided and abetted in deadly rampages, vulnerable people have been encouraged into suicide, professionals have suffered public humiliation, users have lost critical thinking skills, and minors have become addicted to a tool that fakes human compassion to collect their data"6.

Paxton wants a court order blocking minors from ChatGPT. He also wants a court-appointed reviewer to clear any new OpenAI model before release6.

Two of Claude Code's Builders Walk Out

Thariq Shihipar and Anthony Morris left Claude Code this week7. They departed within a day of each other. Shihipar had led the tool's scaling for more than a year. Morris built its desktop app.

Both kept their next plans private. Shihipar posted his goodbye on X, weeks ahead of Anthropic's targeted mid-November IPO.

Thariq@trq212

I’ve left Anthropic after more than a year of working on Claude Code and seeing it scale larger than I ever imagined.

I have really loved working at Ant and believe deeply in the mission, and most of all, the idea of a race to the top.

The idea that if we work hard and…

OpenAI Opens a Fast Lane for Short Answers

OpenAI's Decisions API reached general availability on Oct. 228. It runs on GPT-6 Luna. Instead of a full reply, it returns a probability, one pick, or a score.

OpenAI says the endpoint answers up to ten times faster than asking Luna through its main interface. One request can now carry 400 questions, and pricing starts at ten cents per million input tokens8.

Nvidia Promises Data Centers in 14 Days

Huang also unveiled DSX POD at GTC Berlin, a boxed design for Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems9. Seventeen partners plan to ship it starting in 2027.

Setup time shrinks from six months to 14 days once a site has power and water ready. The design also cuts water use for cooling by up to 100 percent. It needs 30 percent less power for the same output9.

"This is a complete transformation of the world supply chain," Huang said. "This will change the way that people install and build data centers, and hopefully, as a result, velocity goes up"9.

Google's Model Rewrites Its Own Toolkit Overnight

Gemini 4 Argon spent 11 hours alone, tuning Google's Agent Development Kit10. The codebase runs past 200,000 lines across roughly 800 files.

Argon proposed two accepted changes. One cut setup overhead by about 40 percent in long sessions. The other cut cold package import time by 21 percent. It then ran all 16,892 of the kit's own unit tests before stopping10.

Spotify and Believe Bet on AI Remixes

The streaming service and the distributor Believe signed a licensing deal on Oct. 2011. It covers an AI tool for remixes and covers. Participating artists keep links back to their original recordings.

Both companies describe a paid Premium add-on and royalties from remix streams. They left the launch date, the price and the royalty rate for later11.

Musicians Tell Labels: Human Made, Human Paid

The American Federation of Musicians launched a campaign Oct. 20 aimed at the major labels12. It asks Universal, Sony, Warner and Disney's Hollywood Records for consent, credit and pay before any member recording trains an AI model.

Tino Gagliardi, the union's international president, framed the stakes plainly. "Human Made, Human Paid is about consent, credit, and compensation. The AFM will not stand by and allow tech deals to bypass the very artists who made those music catalogs valuable in the first place," Gagliardi said12.

The campaign lands weeks before the union restarts contract talks with the major labels in November.

By the numbers

  • $171.5 billion: Nvidia's total financing exposure to AI cloud partners, $7 billion direct and the rest in guarantees1.
  • 1,145 basis points: CoreWeave's five-year credit default swap spread this month, up 39 percent in October1.
  • 64 percent: the five-year default probability that spread implies, under the market's own pricing model1.
  • $43.8 billion: Microsoft work Nscale's filings tied to projects including the Essex site Microsoft just left4.
  • 14 days: how fast Nvidia's new DSX POD design can deploy a data center, down from six months9.
  • 400: the questions one request can carry through OpenAI's Decisions API, double its beta limit8.
  • 40 percent: the drop in session-preparation overhead Gemini 4 Argon found in Google's own agent toolkit10.
  • 80,000: the professional musicians the American Federation of Musicians represents in its new AI campaign12.

What to watch

Watch whether a ratings firm outside Nvidia publishes its own number for CoreWeave. The swaps market alone carries that call for now. A second signal is whether Nscale still reaches its planned U.S. listing minus the Microsoft anchor its filings counted on.

The American Federation of Musicians resumes contract talks with the major labels in November. Those talks will show whether Human Made, Human Paid changes what labels actually pay.
