Grok Imagine posted a short film on Oct. 23. The film adapts Homer's Odyssey. Elon Musk, the owner of X, shared it the next morning. He wrote four short words: Odyssey with Grok Imagine.

The episode runs about seven minutes. It shows Greek ships sailing to Troy. A collaboration credit names Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker. The team asked fans for comment before planning more episodes.

Musk's post gained 17,825 likes by the time of this report. The original Grok Imagine post gained 15,851 likes. It also gained 1,749 reposts and 1,244 replies. Those numbers keep climbing.

Search interest backs up the buzz. The query "elon musk ai homer odyssey" jumped 8,650 percent on Google Trends in a day. Google marks that jump a breakout.

Reviews split hard. The site The New World called the result terrible. Other viewers praised the visuals and the ambition.

The project traces back to July. Director Christopher Nolan released his own Odyssey film that month, with Matt Damon as the Greek hero. Musk picked apart the casting, including Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy.

Actor Whoopi Goldberg pushed back in public. She told Musk to look at himself first. That exchange turned a movie debate into a bigger fight.

Musk then promised his own version. He said Grok would build a historically accurate Odyssey. Episode 1 is the first proof of that promise.

Grok Imagine kept the episode count open. It asked fans to vote on a full breakdown video instead. The release plan stays loose for now.

A full movie once took a studio, a crew and years of work. This episode took a prompt, a render farm and one weekend of buzz. That gap is the real story here.

The split reaction says something plain. A famous owner can push a clip to millions of people in a day. The craft underneath still gets judged on its own. Big reach and strong reviews are two separate things, and this episode only won the first one.

The take

OpenAI handed a gift to its priciest ChatGPT tier this fall. Pro subscribers, who pay $200 a month, each got 62,500 Codex credits. OpenAI priced that grant at $2,500.

The timing explains the gift. OpenAI cut the Pro plan's usage starting Oct. 30. The included allowance dropped from 20 times the Plus plan to half that, 10 times. The credits were meant to soften the cut.

A Reddit thread this morning found the catch. One poster said their Pro plan ended, yet 57,556 of their 62,500 credits sat unused. Every top coding model then returned an error. Four named models, including one called Astra, stopped working with the credits.

The credits still worked, but only on two smaller models. The poster called those two models far weaker tools. The $2,500 figure, it turns out, buys less once the plan behind it lapses.

Other commenters offered a workaround. They said a cheaper $20 plan can still spend the same credits on every model. The tier you keep paying for decides the real catch.

The thread pulled 23 comments fast. Readers traded fixes and swapped blame. Some called the whole credit system a shell game.

This gap matters beyond one subscriber. OpenAI markets its credits with one flat number, $2,500. The real number depends on a separate plan choice most buyers miss at checkout.

A company that prices its own generosity invites a reader to check the math. Here the math checks out only halfway. The credits exist. The dollar figure is real. Fine print still decides who can spend them on the best model.

That split between a headline number and a working number is the real lesson. Marketing counts credits. Engineers count which models those credits can reach. Those two totals differ this week. One locked error message proved the gap, line by line.

OpenAI's $2,500 in Codex credits stops working on flagship models once Pro lapses.

The take

OpenAI shut down Sora, its video app, back in March. High compute costs forced the move. Each minute of video could burn through dozens of Nvidia chips. The Sora app and its API both closed by September.

Nvidia found a different video bet this week. Nvidia and the investor TCV put fresh money into a startup called Higgsfield. The deal extends a funding round from August. That round values Higgsfield at $5.4 billion.

Higgsfield skips building its own video model. It plugs into other labs' models instead. Its workspace carries more than 15 outside tools. Sora, Google's Veo and Kling all sit inside one subscription.

A Reddit thread framed the swap in plain terms today. OpenAI walked away from its own video tool. Nvidia then backed a company built mostly on everyone else's video tools. The post drew two quick replies.

Higgsfield was founded by a former Snap executive. Much of its engineering team works from Kazakhstan. It uses Nvidia's own Dynamo software to run its video jobs on Nvidia chips.

The pattern says something about where video AI sits today. Training a video model from scratch costs a fortune, as OpenAI just learned. Renting access to five or six finished models costs far less.

Nvidia's bet backs the renter over the builder this time. That choice still sells Nvidia chips either way. Every model Higgsfield offers still needs Nvidia hardware to run.

A year ago, building a video model from scratch counted as the serious path. A pure aggregator counted as a side business. This funding round flips that story. The aggregator now carries a bigger price tag than the app OpenAI just buried. Nvidia wins either way the hype cycle turns.

The take

A small Chinese lab called Nanbeige posted a new model today. The model is Nanbeige4.3-33B. It has 33 billion parameters, a size that can run on a strong home computer.

Nanbeige announced the release on X at 12:11 UTC. The post already drew 1,382 likes within hours. The lab trained a bigger teacher model first. It then shrank that knowledge into this smaller version.

A Reddit post spread the news further. The title made a bold claim. It said the new model beats a rival called Qwen3.8 27B. It also claimed the model nears a larger model called GLM 5.3 Flash.

Commenters reacted fast but carefully. One called it a dense 33B model that needs 48 gigabytes of memory or more to run well. Another asked where the model came from, since Nanbeige rarely makes headlines. A third user noted an earlier Nanbeige model flew under the radar.

The claim stayed unverified in the thread itself. Commenters judged it mostly by eye. Readers weighed the claim against Nanbeige's quiet track record.

The model page on Hugging Face backs up the buzz with real numbers. It carries 209 likes already. A base version of the model carries 29 likes of its own.

Outside coders moved fast too. Two separate accounts already published compressed GGUF versions. Those versions let the model run on smaller, cheaper hardware.

The pattern fits a wider trend in open models. A quiet lab can still ship a model that beats a bigger name's benchmark. Hugging Face and Reddit catch that moment before most news sites do.

Speed is the real story behind the specs. Nanbeige posted the model. Within hours, a community had quantized it, tested it and argued about it. That turnaround used to take weeks for any open model release.

A small lab's new 33 billion parameter model claims it beats a bigger rival.

The take

A headline hit r/singularity today. It said Demis Hassabis thinks we live in the foothills of the singularity. Hassabis runs Google DeepMind. The line sounded fresh, so readers clicked.

One reply killed the mood fast. The commenter, u/TorturedPoet30, said Hassabis made that same point about six months earlier. The link the post pointed to was old. Someone just shared it again and called it new.

More replies piled on. One asked if the singularity now runs in reruns. Another joked about wanting a ski lift past the foothills already. A third said the foothills apparently stretch on forever.

Hassabis's actual line was short and specific. He said it at Stanford's business school on June 18. "We were standing in the foothills of the singularity now," he told the room. He added that human-level machines could arrive as soon as 2030.

Wikipedia traffic shows the phrase still pulls readers in. The page for Demis Hassabis logged 2,464 views on Oct. 24. The page for the technological singularity logged 1,182 views that same day. Both pages usually draw far less traffic on a quiet week.

The mockery points at a real pattern. Big AI predictions often repeat for months. Each repeat can carry zero fresh facts. A line from June can resurface in October and still land as breaking news to a fast scroller.

That gap says something about the people building AI, and the people watching them. Executives keep making the same bold claim in different rooms. They hope it lands fresh each time. Readers, this time, caught the repeat and said so in public.

Hassabis still keeps his predicted moment vague. The 2030 window he named stays five years out. A four-month-old quote can still circle the same forums. Each stop treats it as fresh news again.

The take

A Reddit post today made a big claim about Gemini 4 Argon. It said the model can build its own test harness. A harness is the code that grades and reruns a model's work.

The poster gave Argon one tough job. Match a photo of a sandstone wall with a flat SVG drawing. An SVG is a vector image built from math shapes instead of pixels.

Argon wrote its own scoring loop for the task. It set an 800-line budget for the final file. That limit forced it to refine existing code instead of piling on new lines. It also added its own rollback step, so a bad edit could get undone.

Commenters pushed back fast. One joked about sparks of self-improvement. Another said the final image barely changed after four hours of work. A third asked why the wall still read as deep orange instead of sandstone.

The gap between hype and result is old news for Argon. A tech outlet tested Argon on the ARC-AGI-3 benchmark this month. With a special setup, Argon scored 97.5 percent. With the standard public setup, the same model scored 49.8 percent.

That swing shows how much the harness around a model matters. The model's raw skill barely moved between the two tests. The grading setup around it moved the score by nearly 50 points.

Argon ships with a context window of one million tokens. That window lets it hold a long project in memory at once. A big memory stays separate from a fair grading setup.

So a model writing its own harness raises a real question. Does it build a strict judge, or an easy one? Reddit's four-hour test suggests the images barely improved under the model's own rules.

The lesson here cuts against the headline. Models can absolutely write their own test code today. Whether that code tells the truth about their skill stays an open question.

What it says about the people in AI

Gemini 4 Argon wrote its own grading code, and skeptics saw little real improvement.
