Elon Musk capped Grok Bot's heaviest users on Nov. 1. He blamed the bill.
"The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue," Musk wrote on X1. He was answering a subscriber named Doge Norway, who said many people's weekly usage had run out early.
Thousands of readers weighed in within a day, split over whether the explanation held up1.

The reply that set the limit
Grok Bot is xAI's agent2. It works a task over many steps, far past one chat reply. The beta launched Aug. 11, 2026.
Subscribers pay $30 to $200 a month for it, bundled into paid tiers on X3. The price stays fixed. Usage swings wildly underneath it, since one subscriber's quick question costs far less than another's hours-long task.
Caps fell hard this week. Some subscribers said their usage meters jumped straight to 100 percent, days ahead of the normal reset3.
xAI pointed to "adjusted allocations because of high serving costs"3. The company also flagged a separate dashboard bug that had shown some users the wrong number. It called that bug fixed, apart from the real cut.

Twelve days, two stories
Musk told a different story on Oct. 20, during SpaceX's third-quarter earnings call. "On the Grok bot side, we're seeing the fastest growth of a product that I've ever seen in my life for Grok bot," he told investors4.
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's president, gave the number behind that boast. "Grok bot, our Agentic Assistant, launched in August, and we already had paid weekly users of 800,000 earlier this month, more than doubling over the last month," she said4.
Shotwell pointed at business customers too. "B2B is our fastest-growing category, with companies increasingly using Grok bot as a force multiplier across sales, marketing, IT and engineering, treating it as an always-on teammate for complex end-to-end workflows," she told the same call4.

The unit behind that growth backed it with revenue too. SpaceX Super Intelligence, the division Musk built from what used to be xAI, posted $7.6 billion in third-quarter revenue5. A year earlier, the same unit earned $813 million.

Grok Bot's own growth still left its bill unpaid, Musk said twelve days later. Benjamin De Kraker saw the gap and said so. He resigned from xAI in February 2025, after refusing to delete a post the company wanted gone7.
"Two weeks ago Grok Bot was an incredible success story powering SpaceXai's revenue growth. Now it's unsustainable and loses money," De Kraker wrote on X6. His post turned Musk's own explanation back on itself, in Musk's own timeframe.

Why an agent costs more than a chat window
A chat window answers once and stops. Grok Bot keeps going2. It researches, drafts, and clicks through a task on its own. Every step asks a model to think, and every one of those steps carries its own compute bill.
Picture the difference in cost. A quick question might run a fraction of a cent to answer. An hour-long task, left running on its own, can rack up hundreds of small model calls before it stops.

Two subscribers on the same $30 plan can cost xAI very differently this way. One checks in twice a day. The other leaves Grok Bot running for hours, burning compute the whole time3.
OpenAI hit the same math first9. Late in October it doubled the Work and Codex allowances on its Pro 100 and Pro 500 plans. It also canceled a planned cut to Pro 200. On Oct. 29 it locked down account sharing across its paid plans too.
By December, OpenAI plans to fold ChatGPT and Codex into one shared, token-based allowance9. xAI chose a blunter fix: it kept Grok Bot's price the same and cut what heavy users get for it.
What xAI still keeps closed
xAI merged into SpaceX on Feb. 2, 2026, an all-stock deal that valued the combined company near $1.25 trillion8. The unit rebranded twice since, first to SpaceXAI in July, then to SpaceX Super Intelligence in October.
Each name change came with a bigger revenue number attached. A cost number for Grok Bot alone stayed off every one of them.
That gap keeps both readings of Nov. 1 alive. Musk's math works if Grok Bot's own serving bill, kept private, did outrun what its subscribers pay. De Kraker's math works if a real company rarely finds a loss that fast, and the timing suited the moment.
One disclosure would settle it: a published cost or margin figure for Grok Bot by itself, apart from the unit's total revenue. xAI has kept that number closed.
What to do
Check your own team's agent subscriptions this week. Read the usage meter, past the price tag alone.
Ask any vendor selling an always-on agent what happens when a heavy user runs it all day, far past a quick check-in. xAI answered that question with a cap. OpenAI answered it with a shared allowance. Your vendor has an answer too, even when it stays unpublished until the bill forces it out.
By the numbers
- $7.6 billion: SpaceX Super Intelligence's third-quarter revenue, up from $813 million a year earlier5.
- 800,000: Grok Bot's paid weekly users, reported by Gwynne Shotwell on Oct. 204.
- 12 days: the gap between Musk's growth boast and his cost admission41.
- $30 to $200: Grok Bot's monthly price range, bundled into X's paid tiers3.
- $1.25 trillion: the combined value SpaceX and xAI set on their Feb. 2, 2026 merger8.
- Aug. 11, 2026: the date Grok Bot launched in beta2.
What to watch
Watch for xAI to publish Grok Bot's own cost or revenue, numbers Musk left out of his post. OpenAI's December plan would merge ChatGPT and Codex into one shared allowance, answering the same math a different way. A clear published limit, from either company, would settle the dispute De Kraker raised faster than another post could.
