Alibaba's Qwen team builds some of the most used open AI models. A Reddit post on r/LocalLLaMA shared a new promise from the team.
The post said Qwen 4.0 and Qwen 5.0 will stay open. Open means anyone can download the model's own code and weights.
Most Qwen releases carry the Apache 2.0 license. That license lets a company resell tools built on the model.
Rumors had said otherwise just days before this post. Some posts guessed Qwen might soon sell access through an API only.
Junyang Lin led Qwen's team until he stepped down in March. His exit fed worries that Alibaba might lock the models up.
The post pushed back with real numbers. Qwen models have passed 3 billion downloads worldwide. Over 460 open models carry the Qwen name, the post said.
Builders have made more than 300,000 versions of those models. Each version counts as its own separate download. Few single companies can match that scale.
Redditors reacted fast to the news. The thread drew 95 comments in one day.
Qwen's main code repository backs up the scale. It carries 27,700 stars on GitHub. The same repository has 2,096 forks from other coders.
One flagship Qwen model alone shows the same pattern. It has 351,183 downloads on Hugging Face.
Open models let any coder inspect, change, and reuse the code. Companies can run a Qwen model inside their own walls. That setup keeps sensitive data off an outside server.
China's open models now compete directly with the biggest American labs. Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic all watch Qwen's download numbers closely.
This post gave Qwen's open fans a reason to relax. It also showed how fast rumors spread once one leader walks away.
