Anthropic Posts Haiku 5.5 and OpenAI Answers With GPT-6 Four Minutes Later

Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 post landed at 2:01 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 7 and OpenAI's GPT-6 post at 2:05, the third time this year the two labs have shipped within an hour of each other, and the gap keeps shrinking.

“Four minutes separated Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 post from OpenAI's GPT-6 post on Oct. 7, down from 90 minutes on Sept. 22. Does either lab set its launch clock by the other's?”

Anthropic's Claude account posted Haiku 5.5 at 18:01:16 UTC on Oct. 7, which is 2:01 p.m. in New York1. OpenAI's account posted "GPT-6 and Intelligent UI, now rolling out in ChatGPT for everyone" at 18:05:04 UTC, 228 seconds later, which is 3.8 minutes2. Anthropic preceded OpenAI, as it had on Feb. 5 and Sept. 22, and The AILately.com Desk read both timestamps from the announcements themselves rather than from the coverage, which rounded the interval to minutes12.

Three same-day launches, and a gap that shrinks

Feb. 5 was the first pairing this year. Anthropic announced Claude Opus 4.6 and OpenAI released GPT-5.3 Codex "within an hour of each other on Thursday," Jose Antonio Lanz reported for Decrypt that day6. Sept. 22 was the second: Opus 5.5 arrived at 9:30 a.m. Pacific and GPT-6 Sol and Luna at 11:00, a 90-minute gap, as The AILately.com Desk recorded at the time, and Simon Willison wrote that OpenAI's models came "around an hour later"7. Oct. 7 was the third, at four minutes12.

Fortune's Emily Forlini and Beatrice Nolan described the September pair as a sign of the labs' heated rivalry, "despite both companies' recent calls for an AI slowdown"5. They also recorded the detail that explains October: on Sept. 22, Anthropic said Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 were expected "over the coming weeks"5. Haiku 5.5 was on a public schedule for fifteen days before OpenAI's post landed beside it.

What each company shipped

Anthropic's page calls Haiku 5.5 "the cheapest, fastest, and most capable small model we've ever released" and says it "now costs around 75% less to run" than Haiku 4.53. Up to 100,000 tokens it costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens, which Willison noted "exactly matches the price of GPT-6 Luna," the model OpenAI put behind the free ChatGPT plan the next day4. Above 100,000 tokens, Haiku rises to $0.50 and $2.50, while Luna rises only at 272,000 tokens, to $0.20 and $0.754.

OpenAI's announcement concerned distribution rather than capability, since Sol and Luna had shipped in the API on Sept. 227. Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president, posted at 18:21 UTC, and Isa Fulford, a researcher on the launch team, at 18:37: "I'm so excited to launch GPT-6 today with intelligent UI and the ability to start answering while still thinking! This is the result of many months of work from our team and so many amazing collaborators."1211 Her phrase "many months" sets OpenAI's planning horizon, and Anthropic's "coming weeks" sets the other side's. Both companies had their dates before Oct. 7. The choice that remained was the minute.

The case that the clocks are set against each other

Jean Leon of Android Headlines wrote on Sept. 19, citing a Reuters report, that Anthropic was weighing a fast-tracked model release to defend enterprise share after GPT-6 Astra, which Ramp data put at about 13 percent of enterprise AI spending against 8 percent for Claude Fable8. His verdict came in his own voice: "It really shows that no matter how sincere your safety philosophy is, raw market pressure from a rival like OpenAI will always force your hand."8

Ara Kharazian, lead economist at Ramp, told Fortune in September what the pairing costs both sides: "OpenAI and Anthropic are engaged in a price war that is driving down the price of AI and therefore driving down their ability to profit from it and grow the price of models."5 Yahoo Finance's report by Daniel Howley placed Haiku 5.5 "among the least expensive AI models" and noted that Anthropic's S-1, as Reuters reported it, shows 2025 revenue of $4.6 billion against a loss of $42 billion9.

The case that the overlap is the calendar

Sam Altman, OpenAI's chief executive, described the two companies as sellers to different buyers in February, after Anthropic's Super Bowl ads mocked ChatGPT's coming advertisements. "Anthropic serves an expensive product to rich people. We are glad they do that and we are doing that too, but we also feel strongly that we need to bring AI to billions of people who can't pay for subscriptions," Altman wrote on X, in a post Fortune's Marco Quiroz-Gutierrez quoted10. On that reading, Oct. 7 was a consumer rollout and a developer price cut passing each other, with 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users on one side and API customers on the other.

Willison opened his Haiku post with "As previously promised," a reference to Anthropic's September schedule4. Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive, had published his case for pacing the frontier on Sept. 12, and Altman endorsed it on X the same day58. Fifteen days after Anthropic named the week, the model shipped in it.

What the four minutes settle

Two facts survive both readings. Each company announced its date in advance, in weeks for Anthropic and months for OpenAI, so the overlap of the day was foreseeable to both. The overlap of the minute was a decision, and the record shows who moved second: OpenAI on Feb. 5, OpenAI on Sept. 22, and OpenAI on Oct. 7672. Whether that order is strategy or coincidence, the next pairing will show, because Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Astra sit on both calendars.

By the numbers

  • Oct. 7 gap: 228 seconds, from Anthropic's Haiku 5.5 post at 18:01:16 UTC to OpenAI's GPT-6 post at 18:05:0412.
  • Sept. 22 gap: 90 minutes, between Opus 5.5 at 9:30 a.m. Pacific and GPT-6 Sol and Luna at 11:007.
  • Feb. 5 gap: under an hour, between Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.3 Codex6.
  • $0.10 and $0.50: Haiku 5.5's price per million input and output tokens up to 100,000 tokens, equal to GPT-6 Luna's4.
  • Anthropic's average cost cut from Haiku 4.5 to Haiku 5.5: 75 percent3.
  • Ramp's enterprise spending shares, per the Reuters report: 13 percent for Astra against 8 percent for Fable8.

What to watch

  • Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Astra are the next two scheduled releases; the gap between their announcements extends or breaks the pattern5.
  • OpenAI's next ChatGPT user count shows whether the free-tier rollout and the Haiku price match move the two companies' customer bases toward each other2.
  • Ramp's enterprise spending shares for October show whether Haiku 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna, at the same price, split the same buyers8.
