OpenAI posted on X at 6:05 p.m. UTC on Oct. 7 that GPT-6 "rolls out globally to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users today and will expand to Free and Go users starting tomorrow"1. The post names the two models: GPT-6 Sol for the paid plans and GPT-6 Luna for Free and Go, "both tuned for everyday conversation," and limits the change to the Chat tab, so Work and Codex keep their current models1. By OpenAI's own count at DevDay on Sept. 29, the audience for that change is 1.2 billion weekly users, a figure the company has published once and measured itself6.
Four dates, one model family
GPT-6 Astra, the flagship, shipped on Sept. 3 to paying customers, which makes Oct. 8 the thirty-fifth day of the model family's descent through OpenAI's price list8. Sol and Luna followed on Sept. 22 in the API, in ChatGPT Work and in Codex, where Search Engine Journal reports OpenAI said at the time that Chat would come later37. Oct. 7 put Sol in the Chat tab for paid plans, including Enterprise accounts whose administrators enable it12. A day later, Luna reaches everyone else1.

The numbers behind this chart
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Sept. 3, 2026 | GPT-6 Astra ships to paying customers |
| Sept. 22, 2026 | Sol and Luna reach the API, Work and Codex |
| Sept. 29, 2026 | DevDay counts 1.2 billion weekly users |
| Oct. 7, 2026 | Sol enters Chat for paid plans |
| Oct. 8, 2026 | Luna enters Chat for Free and Go |
Price marks the gap between the two. In the API, Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, and Luna costs $0.10 and $0.50, both halved from the GPT-5.6 models they replaced, according to a Sept. 23 summary by Utku Ege Tuluk of NYU Shanghai's library technology service7. A Luna token costs a twentieth of a Sol token, and the free plan runs on the cheaper one, which means the layout decisions Intelligent UI makes for most of those 1.2 billion users come from the model OpenAI prices lowest167.

The model picks the shape of the answer
Intelligent UI is the feature OpenAI attached to the rollout. In the announcement, as Inside AI quoted it, the company called it "a new capability that allows ChatGPT to answer quickly with fully interactive user interfaces that make everyday answers more visual, make learning complex topics easier, and can swiftly create a tool to solve a task right in the moment"12. GPT-6 chooses the format for each question, and a plain question still gets plain text3. OpenAI built a library of native, streamable components and a compiler that renders the interface as the model writes it, so pieces appear one at a time912.
Aarush Selvan, a product manager at OpenAI, made the case at a media briefing on Oct. 7. "ChatGPT has predominantly been a text-based interface," Selvan said, and the company believes that "from the everyday things like planning a recipe or a trip or even trying to learn something, the most helpful answers aren't just text"2. His examples were a seven-speed bicycle broken into clickable parts and a lamb roast whose recipe recalculates when the guest count changes2.
Read the two verbs OpenAI uses. The model "decides" the layout and "creates" the tool, and the user has one setting, Layout and visuals, to turn the visuals down on the web, with some elements still able to appear3. A reader who prefers text has to request it, which inverts the default ChatGPT carried from November 2022 until this week.
Speed is the second claim. GPT-6 starts answering while it keeps reasoning or calling tools, and OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant begins a web-search answer 44 percent sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant310. Philipp Briel of Basic Tutorials noted that OpenAI's German-language page gives the figure as 32 percent11. Andru Edwards of Gear Live put the measurement in its place: "OpenAI also did the measuring. Nobody outside the company has timed it."4
The case against
Benedict Evans, the analyst and former Andreessen Horowitz partner, wrote on Feb. 19 what a free-tier push is for. "If people are only using this a couple of times a week at most, and can't think of anything to do with it on the average day, it hasn't changed their life," Evans wrote. OpenAI's ad project, he continued, "is partly just about covering the cost of serving the 90% or more of users who don't pay" and "more strategically, it's also about making it possible to give those users the latest and most powerful (i.e. expensive) models, in the hope that this will deepen their engagement"5. Oct. 8 is that strategy in practice, with one adjustment: the free users receive Luna, the model priced lowest, and the paid users receive Sol17.
Mike Wheatley of SiliconANGLE raised two open questions the same evening. "It's also not clear how susceptible these visual elements may be to the problem of every AI chatbot, namely hallucinations," Wheatley wrote, after noting that OpenAI left unsaid whether the extra elements raise token consumption2. He also set the feature beside OpenAI's plan, revealed earlier that week, to run the first image-based ads inside ChatGPT responses, and wrote that "more cynical users might think that the Intelligent UI may make it more difficult to see which responses are ads and which are the chatbots own"2.
OpenAI itself drew a limit. Imran Hussain of iThinkDifferent reported that the company graded the interfaces GPT-6 builds for clarity, usefulness and completeness during training, "and says the model's design judgment still needs more work"9.
What each side needs
Selvan's case needs free users to get answers in the new shapes and to use ChatGPT more often because of them. Evans's case needs that engagement to show up in the figure OpenAI reports next: weekly users above 1.2 billion, and daily use among the 90 percent or more on the free plan56. Wheatley's questions need two measurements OpenAI has yet to publish, tokens per answer and an error rate for charts and tools.
Google shipped a comparable feature in Gemini, which Matthias Bastian of The Decoder dates to May, so the question of whether generated layouts change how a chatbot gets used already has five months of precedent10. Wheatley wrote that Google's version drew excitement at launch and "doesn't really appear to have differentiated Gemini as a chatbot all that much"2. OpenAI now runs the same test on a larger audience.
By the numbers
- 1.2 billion: weekly ChatGPT users, by OpenAI's count at DevDay on Sept. 296.
- $2 and $10: GPT-6 Sol's API price per million input and output tokens, against $0.10 and $0.50 for GPT-6 Luna7.
- 44 percent: how much sooner OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts a web-search answer than GPT-5.6 Instant; the German page says 32 percent311.
- Four dates: Astra on Sept. 3, Sol and Luna in the API on Sept. 22, paid Chat on Oct. 7, Free and Go on Oct. 8178.
- One setting: Layout and visuals, on the web, turns the visual elements down3.
- 90 percent or more: the share of users Evans says use ChatGPT free of charge5.
What to watch
- OpenAI's next weekly-user figure shows whether GPT-6 in the free tier moves the count past 1.2 billion6.
- Any published measure of tokens per Intelligent UI answer, or of error rates in generated charts and tools, would answer Wheatley's two questions2.
- The first image-based ads in ChatGPT responses, and how the interface marks them apart from generated layouts, settle whether the cynical reading holds2.
- A timing of GPT-6 Instant by someone outside OpenAI would test the 44 percent claim4.
