A post titled "GPT-6 Bel Coming Soon" landed in r/OpenAI early Saturday1. It repeated a claim that is two months old. OpenAI finished a giant new model, the post said. The model has a name: Bel.
That claim is older than most readers scrolling past it on a Saturday morning realize. OpenAI has said zero word about Bel since the claim first surfaced on a quiet August weekend.
The Claim, Twice Reposted
One account on X posted the claim first, on Aug. 25, 2026. An account called Wall St Engine repeated it that same day. "Rumor: OpenAI has reportedly completed a new pretraining run codenamed 'Bel,' the successor to 'Doug,' with more than 10T total parameters," the post read2.
A second account, run by Vaibhav Sisinty, who founded the AI education company GrowthSchool, reposted the claim the next morning. He treated it as a near-certain event. "Bel. That's the codename for OpenAI's next major pretrain the one people are already calling their 'monster' model and a straight-up fable killer," Sisinty wrote3.
Sisinty's post adds a label over the first one. It carries zero document and zero named source inside OpenAI. His account simply moves the same claim to a wider audience. An undated screenshot travels as easily in October as it did in August1.
The original post also compared Bel's scale to GPT-4.5, OpenAI's last openly discussed large model. Both companies keep their parameter counts private, so the comparison rests on guesswork on both sides25.

What OpenAI Has Actually Shipped
A codename is an internal nickname for a model under development; "Doug" and "Bel" are both examples. OpenAI kept both names out of its own public materials.
What OpenAI did ship is GPT-6 Astra. The company's own announcement called it "the most intelligent and aligned model in the world"4. Astra reached Pro, Enterprise and Business Premium users in ChatGPT on Sept. 4, 2026, with a rollout to Plus and Business users close behind. OpenAI's announcement also gave Astra a 1.05 million token context window and a knowledge cutoff of Apr. 30, 2026, the kind of specification Bel still lacks.
Astra's internal pretraining run carried the code name Doug, by multiple accounts of the leak. A research firm first described that run to its own subscribers in July, months before Astra shipped5. Doug, put plainly, pointed at something real.
OpenAI's 'Bel' Claim Sat 2 Months Before Reddit Revived It
Dated steps in the Bel rumor's life, from its first X post to its Reddit repost
Each pin marks one dated event; the gap between the August post and the October repost is where the claim's evidence stayed flat.

The numbers behind this chart
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| Aug. 25, 2026 | Bel claim first posted on X |
| Sept. 4, 2026 | GPT-6 Astra ships to ChatGPT |
| Oct. 4, 2026 | CellCog grades Bel 'Unconfirmed' |
| Oct. 24, 2026 | Reddit reposts the Bel claim |
Bel is pitched as Doug's successor, a model meant to sit under whatever comes after Astra. Parameter counts above 10 trillion appear only in the original August post. OpenAI has published zero figure of its own25.
The Case Against Believing It
Nitish Garg runs CellCog, a firm that grades AI claims against what companies actually publish. He reviewed Bel's claim line by line on Oct. 45.
His verdict was blunt. "OpenAI has not announced a model called Bel, and nothing it has published uses the name," Garg wrote5. He checked model documentation, the API changelog and the news feed. Bel appeared in zero of them.
Garg's review sorts every claim it checks into one of four grades: confirmed, partly corroborated, contradicted or unsourced5.

Garg's review tracked the rumor's own timeline too. The account that first posted the claim said on Sept. 23 that Bel still sat months away from release. His tally of prediction markets put the odds of OpenAI shipping a model called GPT-7 before 2027 at about 4 percent5. That finding still held three weeks later, when Reddit revived the same claim with zero addition1.
Doug reached the public through a research firm willing to put its own name on the claim. Bel has reached the public only through anonymous and pseudonymous accounts on X, repeating one screenshot. That contrast is the one that matters here235.
Two months of reposts added volume to this story. They added zero confirmation. A claim that keeps circulating stays a rumor until a document, a benchmark or a named employee turns it into a fact.

What to do
Readers tracking OpenAI's roadmap can treat Bel the way Garg's review treats it. It is a claim worth watching, rather than one worth planning around. Budget and staffing decisions should wait on an OpenAI document, a benchmark or an on-record employee. That is the same bar Doug cleared before Astra shipped.
Anyone citing Bel in a deck or a pitch should name its source plainly. That source is an August post from an account with zero tie to OpenAI. A reader can then weigh it the way this piece does.
By the numbers
- Aug. 25, 2026: the date the Bel claim first posted on X, with more than 10 trillion parameters alleged and zero document behind it2.
- July 2026: a research firm told its own subscribers the Doug pretraining run was underway, months before Astra shipped5.
- Sept. 4, 2026: the date GPT-6 Astra reached Pro, Enterprise and Business Premium users in ChatGPT4.
- About 4 percent: the odds prediction markets gave, as of Garg's review, to OpenAI shipping a model called GPT-7 before 20275.
- Oct. 4, 2026: the date CellCog graded every public claim about Bel as "Unconfirmed" or carrying "No source"5.
- OpenAI's English Wikipedia page logged 7,382 views on Oct. 23, 2026, the day before the Reddit repost6.
- Anthropic's English Wikipedia page drew 6,463 views that same day, for comparison6.
What to watch
OpenAI's own channels are the evidence that would settle this fastest. A model card, an API changelog entry or a named employee speaking on record would do it. CellCog's review is worth rechecking too, since Garg says his grades update as new claims surface.
A second research firm could put its name on the Bel claim, the way one did for Doug before Astra shipped. That would be the clearest sign the rumor has grown into something real.
