OpenAI's ChatGPT Slides Challenges Gamma's Lead

ChatGPT Slides ships free inside three paid plans, skipping Plus, while Gamma's founder says a chat app still trails a dedicated design tool.

“PowerPoint and Google Slides each claim about 500 million monthly users, a scale Gamma's own founder says scares him more than any rival startup. Will a slide tool bundled free inside ChatGPT catch up to that scale faster than the company that builds only slides?”

OpenAI shipped a tool called ChatGPT Slides on Oct. 161. It builds a deck inside ChatGPT, then lets a team edit it together13. Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers get it first12.

The $20 Plus plan sits outside that list2. Solo buyers feel that gap first. Plus is OpenAI's cheapest paid tier for one person. Anthropic's $20 Claude Pro plan already bundles its own version, a feature it calls Claude Design, Slides and Docs9.

OpenAI moved fast. It previewed Slides at its DevDay conference on Sept. 29, then opened it to real Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts seventeen days later513.

How ChatGPT Builds a Deck

A user starts inside Space, OpenAI's shared work area within ChatGPT1. They describe a topic, point at an old chat thread, or upload files13. ChatGPT drafts text, shapes and charts, then waits for notes1.

Teammates and OpenAI's chat agent can join the same deck at once13. They leave comments, swap images or rewrite a slide's wording1. The finished deck exports to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides on the web13.

A desktop version opens that same deck inside PowerPoint or Keynote, when a user already owns them3. OpenAI built a separate add-in for PowerPoint first, back on July 62. Slides is the newer, standalone version that stays inside ChatGPT until someone exports it2.

Three Vendors, Four Different Prices

Four prices, one task. Anthropic folds its version into Claude Pro, at $20 a month9. Gamma, the company built only for decks, charges $25 a month for its own Pro plan11.

Microsoft charges separately again. Copilot inside PowerPoint runs $30 a seat each month, stacked on an existing Microsoft 365 license10. Google's Gemini in Slides needs a Workspace Business Standard plan or higher, skipping the entry-level Starter tier2.

OpenAI's own cheapest plan with Slides is Pro, at $100 a month28. A team reaches the feature cheaper, through Business, at $20 a seat billed yearly28. That route needs two seats and an administrator to set it up8.

Microsoft's price is an add-on atop an existing Microsoft 365 license. ChatGPT's $20 Business seat needs two or more buyers.

A single professional working alone still pays the Pro price2. One contract term may explain why.

Business and Enterprise both promise OpenAI will skip training its models on a customer's files8. Plus offers only a toggle a user can switch off8. A deck full of client numbers fits the kind of file that promise protects.

What a Deck Risks Once It Lives in Chat

A Slides deck follows the sharing rules of the Space that holds it2. OpenAI's own enterprise page states the policy plainly: "Slides uses the same access setting as Space and pages"2. Removing someone's personal invite leaves their Space-wide access standing2.

Comments work, but one role is missing. A page inside Space offers view, comment and edit access. Decks skip the middle option, offering only view or edit2. Anyone asked to react to a client pitch gets full editing rights, or gets locked out.

Exporting solves the sharing question differently. The file that leaves ChatGPT becomes its own copy, separate from the Space version underneath it2. Teammates keep revising that underlying working deck, which stays governed by Space's own retention rules2.

OpenAI Wants Every Task in One Place

OpenAI's chief executive, Sam Altman, framed the whole push at that September event5. He described Space as the shared area meant to hold every file a team touches. "Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," Altman said5.

The push began earlier than that single stage appearance. OpenAI quietly bought a startup called NextSlide back on Aug. 97. NextSlide had spent roughly a year turning notes and research into finished decks7.

Founder Ahmed Beshry moved his small team straight into ChatGPT7. "The NextSlide team is now at OpenAI, helping build ChatGPT," he wrote in a note on the company's own site7. It marked his second exit; Instacart bought his previous startup, Caper AI, in October 20217.

The timing carries tension. Microsoft remains OpenAI's largest investor, and PowerPoint belongs to Microsoft7. Every deck OpenAI builds lands inside a market its biggest backer already owns7.

Gamma Still Leads on Design, Its Founder Says

Jon Noronha co-founded Gamma, the company that sells only presentation software46. He has watched OpenAI build a rival version from inside a chat app. "We saw ChatGPT agent come out just a few weeks ago. It makes PowerPoints. Thankfully for us, not very good ones," Noronha said4.

Gamma's own numbers back that confidence: 70 million users last November, a count it said was approaching 100 million by March6. That growth helped Gamma raise $68 million and reach a $2.1 billion valuation6.

Grant Lee, Gamma's chief executive, points to a gap the biggest players still miss. "We think we can serve the very long tail of knowledge workers and business professionals whose demand for their job is to communicate visually, but they just don't have the tools," Lee told TechCrunch6.

Noronha still respects the scale sitting across from him. "The one that scares us most is still PowerPoint and to a lesser extent Google Slides because they are still the dominant incumbents," he said4. The stat he has heard puts PowerPoint and Google Slides each near 500 million monthly users, next to Gamma's own tens of millions4.

What to do

Check what a current plan already includes before buying anything new. A Business or Enterprise subscriber already has ChatGPT Slides bundled in12. Someone on Claude Pro already has Anthropic's version for the $20 a month that plan already costs9.

Treat a first draft from any bundled tool as a start, rather than a finished file. Noronha says a chat agent's decks still read as plain4. Finish the design pass in whichever program the client expects to receive2. Then confirm who can still open the working deck once the project ends2.

By the numbers

  • $100: OpenAI's cheapest monthly plan that includes ChatGPT Slides, Pro, skipping the $20 Plus tier entirely28.
  • $20: the monthly price of Claude Pro, which already bundles Anthropic's own slide-building tool9.
  • $25: Gamma's monthly Pro price, or $18 a month billed yearly11.
  • $30: Microsoft's monthly Copilot add-on for PowerPoint, billed per seat on top of a Microsoft 365 license10.
  • 500 million: the monthly user count Jon Noronha says he has heard for PowerPoint, and separately for Google Slides4.
  • Gamma's own count: approaching 100 million users by March, up from 70 million the previous November6.
  • $2.1 billion: Gamma's valuation after its November funding round6.
  • 17: days between OpenAI's DevDay preview of Slides and its public launch51.

What to watch

Watch whether OpenAI opens Slides to the $20 Plus plan, a move that would answer its own training-data question directly8. Gamma's user count past 100 million is worth tracking too, since that figure keeps its new valuation honest6. A dedicated tool holds its advantage only as long as the bundled version stays plain.
