Apple Ships Its Gemini Siri, Then Waitlists It

Apple's promised Siri arrived 826 days late, in English only, gated by a waitlist, while the EU and China wait longer still.

“Apple spent 826 days turning one keynote promise into a product, then handed the first copies out through a waitlist. Did two years of delay buy Apple the Siri its own ads once showed?”

Siri AI shipped on Sept. 14, 2026, inside iOS 271. Apple built it on Google's Gemini models, under a deal the two companies signed in January3. The idea first appeared at Apple's June 2024 keynote. Between that promise and this ship date, 826 days passed.

Owning an iPhone 15 Pro or newer earns you a chance to ask for it today. Apple put the new assistant behind a waitlist, so the date it reaches your phone depends on a line only Apple can see11.

Two Years of Promises, Then a Google Contract

Apple's trouble started at the top. The company showed a "more personalized" Siri at its June 10, 2024 keynote, built into what it called Apple Intelligence7. That version missed the year entirely.

Apple confirmed the delay in March 2025. "It's going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features," the company told reporters, adding that it expected to roll them out "in the coming year"15.

The coming year became two. Apple and Google signed a multiyear deal in January 2026 that put Gemini, Google's family of AI models, inside Siri3. Bloomberg later put the price near $1 billion a year. Mark Gurman then reported Apple would demo the result in February, aimed at phones running iPhone 15 Pro or newer4.

February slipped too. Gurman reported on Feb. 11 that Apple had missed its iOS 26.4 target and would spread the new Siri features across iOS 26.5 and iOS 27 instead5. Google's own cloud chief, Thomas Kurian, told a conference crowd on April 22 that the models would power "a more personalized Siri coming later this year"6.

The ads kept running past the point Apple admits it should have pulled them. A class action over those ads cost Apple $250 million in a May 2026 settlement8. The case argued Apple oversold a Siri that existed only on a keynote stage, and a court let the claim proceed.

What Actually Shipped on Sept. 14

Apple unveiled Siri AI at WWDC on June 89. Three tiers decide where each request goes. Simple tasks stay on the phone.

Harder ones move to Apple's own servers. The hardest land on Google Cloud hardware, running a custom Apple model trained with Gemini.

Tim Cook used his last keynote as chief executive to defend the privacy setup. "We're not changing our privacy rules," he told developers, even as Apple's hardest queries now leave the device9.

The feature list reads long. A chat window keeps its history across devices, and the camera reads a nutrition label out loud. Tasks that outgrow Apple's own model get handed to ChatGPT or Claude instead9. Siri AI can also create calendar events and automations straight from a spoken description1.

All of it stops at the EU border for now. Apple blamed Brussels. "We're deeply disappointed that our EU users won't have Siri AI on iPhone or iPad when we share our new software releases later this year," Craig Federighi said, after regulators rejected an 18-month rollout plan Apple proposed under the Digital Markets Act2.

China waits too, pending its own regulatory approval1. English speakers everywhere else get Siri AI first; five more languages, including Spanish and Japanese, follow in October13.

The Waitlist That Came With It

Owning the right phone earns a place in line. A place in line is where it stops. Apple says wait times "vary, with some users receiving access to Siri AI within a few minutes of signing up and others having to wait a few hours or even days"11.

Early reviews landed as mixed verdicts, short of triumphant. Longtime Apple reviewer Federico Viticci tested the assistant for his site's annual review and found the model underneath it wanting. "I find Siri AI's underlying models to be subpar compared to the competition: for anything beyond a simple knowledge query, I can't see Siri AI replacing ChatGPT and its superior reasoning modes combined with web search," he wrote10.

Ordinary users posted similar complaints within a week of launch. One reported asking Siri AI to find an address from a text message, only to watch it misread the request14. A site that tracks Apple news called the gap between the hype and the result "not even in the same universe," though it credited real gains over the old assistant.

The Case for Taking Longer, and the Case Against

Apple's defense of the delay predates the ship date by a year. Craig Federighi, Apple's software chief, explained the company's reasoning to TechCrunch before Siri AI existed. "There's no need to rush out with the wrong features and the wrong product just to be first," he said, describing why Apple scrapped an early, broken version of the assistant7.

Federico Viticci's review argues the opposite case. He built it on weeks of actual use, well after the keynote demo ended. His verdict, quoted above, says the wait bought Apple a product that still trails the rivals it was racing. Brian Mulberry, an analyst at Zacks Investment Management, framed the stakes for Apple's new leadership bluntly: "AI is the single biggest challenge for John Ternus, who replaced Tim Cook as CEO on Sept. 1"12.

Both men are describing the same software. One finds a company that chose care over speed. The other finds a company that spent two years catching up, then arrived behind.

What to Do

Check your iPhone model before you check the calendar. Siri AI needs an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. An iPhone 14 or older keeps the previous assistant, whatever date Apple reaches your name11.

Join Apple's waitlist from the Siri settings menu now if your phone qualifies. The queue appears to clear faster for early signups than for latecomers11.

Keep a second option ready for complex requests in the meantime. Google's own Gemini app is free on the iPhone today and skips the waitlist entirely. Siri AI can already hand hard questions to ChatGPT on your behalf19.

By the numbers

  • 826 days passed between Apple's Siri promise and its U.S. ship date, June 2024 to September 20261.
  • $1 billion a year is roughly what Apple pays Google for Gemini's models, under their January 2026 deal3.
  • $250 million settles the class action Apple's delayed Siri ads provoked8.
  • One of six promised languages, English, works at launch; five more land in October13.
  • iPhone 15 Pro marks the oldest model that qualifies, even though iOS 27 itself runs on an iPhone 1111.
  • A few minutes to several days: how long Apple's waitlist took to clear for the first wave of testers11.

What to watch

The October language rollout tests whether Apple hits its own date this time, after missing three in a row. Brussels gets the next move on the EU block, which still carries an open timeline. Ternus faces his first earnings call as chief executive, with Siri AI as his clearest public test. Investors will ask what comes after the waitlist clears.
